I'm a complete novice when it comes to drones but feel that now is the time to buy my first one. I'm leaning towards the Mavic Air 2.

I've been looking at Drones Direct and as they have a shop around an hour from me where they do a free demonstration they seem a good bet. However, if anyone can recommend either them, or any other supplier for a "Drone Novice" I'd be very grateful.

Secondly is the matter of insurance. I understand that it's a good idea to have some kind of liability insurance, but as I also envisage using the drone around coastal and rural areas I'd want something to cover me if the drone crashed in to the sea/lake etc and was a write off, or I was unable to retrieve it. I don't want to spend the best part of £1000 and risk losing everything due to an incident/accident (or even my own incompetence). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
 
I had the air 2 as my first drone and just upgraded to the 2s.

Very easy to use.

Coverdrone insurance is about £70 for non commercial usage.
 
DJI have their own cover for lost drones. You pay an upfront fee and then if something happens , you pay another excess fee to get a new drone. You’d need to look into the figures to see if it’s worth it though. I have it on my mavic 2 pro, but that’s worth a lot more than an air. There is some grey area over water loss, as the small print says you have to send the old drone to them to get a replacement, but I’ve known many people get a replacement from water loss when the drone was not retrievable. I guess you and they can clearly tell by the logs that the drone was lost.
 
You could look to get a Mini which is a great entry level, build up skills, see how you use it and then look to upgrade after that?

I am on the mini and love it - so much so I plan to get something else, cant decide whether to go for a bigger one or the mini 2, or as I am in no rush, wait till the mini 3 comes out?

Unless they've changed it in the last 12 months it didn't cover fly-aways, so coverdrone worked out better. Worth double checking though.
