So I have seen lots of shoots of the first dance and cake cutting there seems to be a trend for having an additional star burst type effect point of light in the background - how is this generally done? What are the pitfalls?

I assume its a second flash on a stand high up placed in the background with a trigger setup - But how is it achieved?

That and a small aperture.;)

The pitfalls:

You still need to get some good clean shots, so it's a job for 2 cameras and 2 or 3 flashguns (at least).

Giving yourself a list of loads of shots in a small amount of time can lead to you getting nothing you're happy with, especially as you have no control over the way your couple will face:(. My last couple stayed in almost the same position all the way through their first dance, and if I'd been alone I would've struggled to get a decent shot at all (although I'd have moved if I hadn't had a 2nd in a better position).

As Phil says, small aperture - I tend to use atleast two flashes on stands for this. It can be tricky to keep sufficient light on their faces sometimes

Thanks for the heads up on this.....I have seen a few with a starburst effect on the back flash - has this been done in PP.....or is it an effect achieved with the lens? looks like PP to me.

Thanks for the pointers though...I appreciate them

Thanks!
