What would be a good digital point and shoot camera for taking pics of the countryside, views down country lanes, feeds, woods, fungi, plants and wildlife ?

Needs to be lightweight so I can carry it in a pocket or belt pouch.

I only want to have a go to see if anything comes of it, so a camera i can get cheap secondhand.

Do you have a cell phone? A cell phone will do any photos that you would want a P&S camera for. Even someone's old, but still working cell phone would be good if it comes with a charger. Not a very old cell phone, but one 3 years old or les, if there is a charger for it and the battery hasn't started swelling, would be a good, and likely FREE choice of a good, light, and cheap P&S camera. There are several ways to download photos from them. A data cable with USB connector on the non phone end would allow downloading to a computer without going to an online website. The cost of this cable in the USA is less than $5. Put a tag on it so you can tell which cable it is, as the charging cables do not contain the data wires, but the ones with the data wires can be used for charging, although usually at a slower charge rate.

Most P&S cameras have disappeared from the market, since cell phones began getting good cameras in them.

That's a wide ranging brief. I doubt you will be able to cover all your bases with a point and shoot camera.

I would suggest getting a second hand Compact digital camera. My late wife's Pentax Optio H90 fits all the criteria, I'm not selling it. But 12.1mp, fits in a shirt pocket, a decent zoom lens, and macro. Simple but very capable.

Maybe look for an Olympus, but there are so many similar compact digital cameras that meet all your criteria.

As above, a modern cellphone is a better camera than an old P&S, that’s why the point and shoot market has all but died.

It’s also a better diary and organiser than my old Filofax, better games machine than my old Atari, has a web browser I use every day, holds thousands of Lp’s so I can listen to any music that takes my fancy.

It’ll never be ‘better’ than my old turntable and amp, or indeed my mirrorless camera and lenses, but it’s certainly better than anything entry level.

Once you’ve reached the limitations of your phone, you should at least know what questions to ask to get a ‘proper’ camera to meet your needs.
