Hi All!

I am very very new to photography and I am looking for my first camera around £500. After lots of research and talking to different shops, I think I want to get a mirrorless camera.

I Want to get used to it first before spending big, it will mainly be for things like hiking, walking and some product shooting.

Been advised a few cameras but literally have no idea!

Olympus m!0 Mark III
Sony A6000
Canon M200

Anyone got any more recommendations or any advice on what to look for?
Thanks

I'd be happy with either Oly or Sony, but probably not the Canon because I think it's not got a future as a system and the lenses are specific to that small range of cameras.

Other factors: lenses may be a bit less expensive for the Oly, especially bought used.

Hi and welcome to TP

Ideally, you should go to a camera shop and hold them.......?

But one stand out difference of the 3 you mention is that the Olympus has both a built in viewfinder and the rear LCD whereas the Sony and Canon only have the rear LCD. That difference alone will affect 'usability' especially in regard to landscape photography on your walks...with the sun shining on the rear LCD it is hard to see what you are photographing..???

The Olympus system is great...functionality it is as good as any camera I've used & you can pick up great lenses for cheap 2nd hand. The only thing that "holds it back" is the sensor but this will be inconsequential to a new photographer. I say this after having used Oly cameras a lot in the past and still having a Panasonic M43 camera.

Thanks, I have seen a great offer with Jessops for £499 including a lens as well Mark III.
I think I will give it a go!

The Sony A6000 does have a built in View finder that you put your eye to, This is useful as sometimes in bright sunlight it is impossible to see the Rear LCD screen, But you can still see the image you are trying to take in the eye finder.

Ah! I stand corrected :).......though I still think to he Olympus OMD EM10 mk3 is going to serve the OP well ;)

My boy (he's 14) has the A6000 & he gets on fine with it. It's not a bad camera in all honesty from what I can tell aside from high ISO isn't great imo But presuming you are hiking during daylight hours & using lighting for products plus using a tripod that shouldn't be an issue anyway.

The only thing I was worried about was the mp on the Olympians.
Noticed it wasn’t 20+
will this make a big difference for me?

Don't worry about megapixels, you will more than likely upgrade your camera in the future.

Firstly, if the Jessops one you mentioned is the twin zoom kit set ~ IMO for someone starting out.....it is a 'snip'

Re: 16mp sensor vs 20mp ~ for your learning purposes, makes no noticeable difference. ....or are you intending to print large prints??? If your aim is web usage images and say prints up to 20x16 then you should have little to be concerned about.

The largest sensor on Olympus is 20mp but the 16mp was in use for some years and there are many images 'out there' that show its 'worthiness'. So please do not get hung up on mp count as the best arbiter for your decision

In future you will likely out grow what the EM10 mk3 body ~ but that is the future ;)

PS don't forget to buy memory cards and what about editing software for your PC?

I’d say forget the Canon, the system doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. The Olympus system is great, I loved mine. The only thing that I would say is that Olympus Camera Dept has recently been in difficulty and has recently been sold and no-one knows what the future holds. The fact they’re giving away £1000 lenses at the moment doesn’t fill me with the greatest confidence, but of course even the current cameras and lenses can last a lifetime.

The Sony A6xxx cameras are very good and ‘can’ give you better image quality due to the larger sensor, but differences will be minimal. The lens choice for the Sony system isn’t as good as the Olympus system though imo.

Don’t get hung up on MP, it won’t affect image quality unless you want to crop heavily or print very large.

I think I am going to invest in Adobe, PS and LR to start with, and see how i get on!

Thanks for all of your help to everyone who has commented, much appreciated!
