Got my first job as a 2nd shooter at a local wedding coming up this year, looking forward to it as it'll be a big learning curve for me.

Those that 2nd shoot regularly, or have just started do you have any advice/what to expect?

:)

Hi Holly - I went the other week to pay a pro back for letting me use his studio to shoot still life. I made sure that I had clear instructions about exactly what he wanted in the church [I shot the arrivals] and at the reception. I would also make sure that you never get in his / her way! try and be in a different place - this made sure that I picked up different candids that the happy couple chose for their book. Hope that helps.

All photographers will have slightly different expectations, you need top sit down with the pro and get clear instructions and find out exactly what he expects. And get a contract to back it up.

Ive done a fair bit of second shooting, and in my experience its best to remember -

Be on time!!
Remember its their gig, not yours
Bring your own ideas
Dont be afraid to be creative
Look at the photographers site beforehand to get a sense of their 'style'
Smile all day!
Be ready to work hard and spend a long day on your feet
Remember to have fun and enjoy it, and listen to the pro and take their advice on board

Hope that helps a bit

Just a little update on this for anyone who's interested :)

So I did my first 2nd shooter job last weekend and I really enjoyed it.

The thing that struck me most was how quick the time went especially at the church, it really was all go go go!

The pro was pleased with how I worked and has asked me to 2nd shoot again later in the year.

Hard work but very rewarding in terms of experience, definitely worth it.

Hi

Can I ask how you went about getting the opportunity? Did you just start asking local photographers or did you know the person in question?

Glad it went well!

I was quite lucky that the person I worked with I knew already, and we had worked together on a few projects when I was at uni.

I imagine it would be quite hard getting a local photographer to want to let you 2nd shoot, because essentially they'd be helping the competition. But I'd imagine there's also some who'd be happy to take an assistant on if they'll be gaining something too.
