I should be in Finland for work in a few weeks. I want to take the opportunity to get out with my camera. I'm hoping for somewhere coastal, iced over possibly but with tides that break the ice over rocks on the shoreline. Nothing specific :-). Northern lights will be a bonus. I'm thinking west coast halfway up or so.

I'll be in Helsinki but will rent a car to get out and about. Driving 4-5 hours from Helsinki should be do-able.

Any clues/experience? Thanks.

I'm not the MVP for anything David.
I'm way too far north in Finland to offer any solid advice Andy, Your best best will be the Bay of Bothnia, I've stayed in the Kemi/Oulo region briefly, but not long enough to have any useful recommendations.
I'd maybe take a look at the work of Tina Torminen, she's based in the southern part of Lapland, so her area probably covers areas accessible to you. She puts out some lovely work.
The northern lights are usually viewable at these latitudes even with a really weak forecast. If you want some information on the activity and likelyhood of displays, feel free to drop me a message. I'm monitoring the activity and weather patterns up here for work on a daily basis, so I should be able to give a good idea of what we can expect.
