Hi all,

I've seen some pretty stunning pictures taken at even more obscure locations at silly times of the day and night as I look about the forum/flickr and I've come to wonder how on earth do you find these places?

Say for instance I wanted to find that mystical fairy grove by a stream in woods with dappled lighting, where would I start?

Cheers,

John

I often wonder myself how they come across stunning scenery.

Yip, Merc's approach makes sense.
If you don't have intimate knowledge of places then possible locations will just not spring to mind.

That could be a hard way of doing things. You could do an awfull lot of searching before you found that (and you'd still need to get lucky with the lighting).
Perhaps another approach would be to go to attractive areas and see what shots you can conjure up.

However, Google always helps.
Look up Fairy Glen, Wales
Fairy Glen, Appleby Br., Lancs
Fairy Glen, Rosemarkie

All look quite photogenic.

Local knowledge is a must. I live in Marlow, and know exactly where I can sit for hours and not see another person.... this is right on the edge of town.. Look at OS maps or as mentioned Google Earth etc... Then get up very early. I am sometimes up at 3am to be by the river after filling up with coffee by 4am...

Oviously depends on where you live, and how far you are willing to travel, but give an approximate location and ask the members on here!
State what type of location, what you want to shoot and how far you will go. Also might not be a bad idea to say how far you can walk!!
I know some stunning sites around Lancs and West Yorks, and plenty in other places, as I have been walking/hiking/camping for well over 30 years!

Excellent advice all, many thanks.

I actually live in a place called Chruch Warsop near Mansfield and have a wood round the corner from me, but its mostly fern covered so finding a spot isn't easy, but yep I shoudl just get out at unual times + scour maps and see if I can figuer out what works.

I'll also take a look at that link (when I'm at home and not shirking off from work as I am now!)

A good OS map will give you an impression of the lie of the land, but beyond that the trick is to put your boots on and go for a walk.

Not being funny but walking is a always a good idea ;)

Seriously though, most of the best locations are not to be found at the side of a road and a good wander around produces some suprising shots.

I'm fortunate to combine photography with my main hobby, hiking, so come across some great locations - unfortunately not always in the best lighting on the first visit as it's normally during daytime. I tend to make a note of the location and then plan a revisit in better conditions.

Exactly the same, only I take a pic with my phone and record the co-ordinates on the mapping software. (Viewranger)

join a walking club...they get to some good places...

Google Earth ;)

It has found me several locations including the Fairy Glen ancient woods in outside Ormskirk!

Well done on finding that glen :)

I've got to get out to more and less well travelled locations :)

I took a look at TPE (link further up this thread) and that looks interesting giving sunset/rise times along with the height of hill/mountains so you will now if they will be in shadow.
