Finally can afford to buy my new kit, bit of help please :)

Hi everyone. I finally have enough money to buy my new DSLR and lenses. I will be mainly using it for a bit of everything, landscapes, holiday shots, friends with a view to taking shots of my partners choreographys for her website.

I have decided that I am going to get the Canon 50D for my body but as far as lenses go, I have a few options and cannot decide what to get.

Either

15-85 plus a 50mm 1.4 prime for the dance work
17-55 plus 85mm 1.8 prime
15-85 plus 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8

What do you think would be the best for my general purpose photography with the occasional dance work. The dance stuff will be stage work in low light but would be able to move around and some rehearsals in the studio.

2nd option without a doubt, just a much better zoom lens and presumably that will get the most use

Already decided on the canon route as I prefered the way the Canon felt over the Nikon plus canon lenses seem to be a bit cheaper as well.

Is there much difference in 55 - 85 on a crop body?
 
Option 2 as well, 17-55 is a fantastic lens, f2.8 and IS. The 85mm doesn't get a lot bad said about it either. It's a far better focal length than 50mm (IMHO).
 
Option 2 stands out, I have recently bought an 85mm 1.8 and it is stunning, takes some getting used to but it's an optically fantastic lens. Length is good for my candid and street stuff.

Any reason you have specifically chosen the 50D over the 7D or even 40D?
 
I have read the 15-85 is not up to much but i know the 17-55 is a fantastic lens so i guess it is No 2 from me.

Did you consider an EF 24-105 IS and 85mm f1.8?
 
Option 2 sounds like the way to go. Maybe if you could find the lenses second hand, you could get a 50mm f/1.8 out of your budget as well?

As for your choice of body, you chose the right way - the body that felt best in your hands. That's how I chose several years ago and is why I use Nikons, even though I cursed my choice a few years later when it was a Canon DSLR that fell into my budget well before a Nikon equivalent!
 
Haven't got either, but I reckon option 2 sounds the way to go aswell.
From the tests and shots I've seen the 17-55mm is a stunning lens and the 85 f/1.8 gets a good write up too. I'd go for that.

I'd also recommend going 2nd hand and seeing what else you could squeeze out of your budget, however that's your choice!
 
Thanks for all your help guys, looks like the 2nd option seems favourite. Reason I am going for the 50D is that having tried it, I really like the way it feels. Can't really afford the 7D with the lenses. Am tempted by second hand but like the option of having warranty. Having bought a lot of second hand items before (not photography) I am a bit wary.

Buying used from here or POTN is the way to go. I do tend to avoid used items on eBay or the like but on a dedicated photography forum you are able to request example shots and know that the gear has been looked after by someone just as keen on quality as you.
I recently bought an 18month old 40D and a year old 85mm on here, both items came as if they were new :)

I agree. There are a good set of rules and a good set of users on this forum. I've bought and sold many things without issue.
