After much deliberation, finally settled on the 40d some days ago and have been hunting around for a good deal.

Just got, what I think, is a fantastic deal on an as new, mint 40d together with battery grip and 2 batteries. Body has under 1000 actuations. Being posted tonight, yippee.

Now I need to get to grips with all the lens options and make a few decisions so Im sure I'll be asking a question or two back here.

Very happy :)

It's a very capable camera, hope you enjoy :woot:

congratulations, you'll be broke (like the rest of us) by the ned of the month once you start looking at lenses

Thanks all.

Now then, lenses.

First off I need to think about a general purpose walkabout lens.

My thoughts are possibly a 28-135 or a 17-85. Dont think I want to go 18-200 as not heard good reports on these.

Problem is it feels like "28" may not be wide enough but on the other hand "85" may not be long enough, almost as though a 17-135 would be perfect but dont think there is one. Think id like to stay with Canon USM as the ones Ive looked at are so fast and quiet.

Any thoughts or advice?

No idea on the lenses as I rarely use the wide end, but good luck with the camera, hope you have as much fun with it as I do :)

Was this an Ebay purchase, I think I was watching this if it was (amongst the other 12 )
I'm struggling with the commit button at the moment.

Remember the 40d body is cropped, so the 28 will be more than 28mm

I have just bought a 40d as well

Got it from jessops, good deal with the buy now pay later option

when asking advice on lenses, you should mention budget, as there is some very expensive options out there.

what do you like to photograph?

what camera did you have before?

I had a 28-105 (I think) once. awesome budget canon lens I thought, however, not that wide.
basic wide stick to 17 or 18. the 17-85 IS is great but 17 is quite distorted I always thought. the tamron 18-250 might do the trick for you.

I am a firm believer in getting a mid-range zoom for any camera as the start of a lens battery or as simply the only lens. I don't believe in using the zooms with the widest range because in achieving that range (such as 18-200mm) the makers have necessarily cut corners. Usually those zooms with the enormous zoom ranges don't have the best IQ, the fastest auto-focus or even decently wide apertures.

The absolute best mid-range zoom for the 40D is the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens. However, that lens is pretty pricey. IMO, it is worth the cost and is what I have chosen as my go-to mid-range zoom. The IQ is great, the focal range is very usable (about 28-88mm equivalent), the auto-focus is fast and accurate and the constant f/2.8 aperture combined with latest generation IS makes this a very viable low light lens.

A good, less costly alternative to the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens is the great Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. This lens has excellent I.Q., fast auto-focus, a very usable focal range (about 28mm to 80mm). Although it doesn't include Image Stabilization (IS); it does have a constant f/2.8 aperture. IMO, IS is really icing the cake when considering a lens of this focal length.

The 17 to 50-55mm range is a great working range. It is wide enough for most shooting yet has the reach that makes it a nice focal length for head and shoulders portraits. This focal range also matches very well with the 70-200mm f/4L IS or 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lenses.

I use the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and the 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses for about 90% of my shooting and although I have shorter and longer lenses, could be very happy if these two were my only two lenses.

Yup, definately need a budget!

My first comment was going to be 24-105 F4 L IS, but then you're talking a lot of cash compared to the other options on the market.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I decided to start off with the 28-135 Canon IS USM lens, read plenty of reviews and they are very well rated. Luckily picked up an almost new one off here for a great price. That will do me for starters to see how I get on and I can consider upgrading when I get used to everything. I think its a good walkaround lens too.

I'm also going to buy the obvious 50mm 1.8 for some indoor speed.

Thereafter, not sure just at present but the above will do for the timebeing Im sure.

Congrats on buying a 28-135, it's a great starter lens until you decide what you want to specialise in.
I bought a 50mm f1.8 as well after the 28-135 but sold it soon after as I found the zoom better for me under low light conditions with the IS.

Who's this ned of the month then? :D

Congrats - the 40D is a great camera.

Hmm, interesting comment, hadn't thought about it in that way.

Good luck with the lens choice. I think you will find this is very dependent on personal choice and what you shoot. The 28-135 is an excellent value lens and the IS is very useful. Depending on your preferences and shooting style you might find after a while that your IQ is limited by the lens. If you want to stick with zooms something like a 24-105 f4 L is noticeably better, but also a lot more money!

Dont forget to check out 3rd party brands too, like Tokina, Tamron and Sigma for those extra lenses. I bet you will be after a longer zoom before long!
