I promise this will be my last thread. I am probably going to buy my first DSLR tonight. I had decided (after a huge amount of help from you all) that the camera I would buy would be:

Canon EOS 40D with a 50mm F/1.8 Yongnuo lens.

However a friend of mine studying photography didn't rate it as he thought the ISO was low along with picture quality. A lot of you have said don't get too caught up in the equipment at this stage, focus on getting the best photograph from the equipment which I totally agree with, however because I will be forking out a good bit of money (for me) I do want to feel confident in what I'm buying.

He recommend the Nikon D3200 or D3300.

I am willing to spend (for the body and lens) about £300 second hand. (My budget has increased a little), so help me out guys. Within that budget and bearing in mind I am mainly looking at doing portraits (although I will buy a second lens that's better for nature shots should I stick to the Canon EOS 40D, or go with the Nikon, or for my now increased budget could I get something better second hand?

Blah, so hard making a choice, just need to do it!

Go try them both in your hands after you have researched the images they take on line e.g. Flickr.

..every time you start a new thread rather than continue the old one when the topic remains the same you potentially lose the participation of all those members that have contributed to the earlier thread (or threads, you're scattering them left right and centre), they won't get alerts to this thread but they would to a continuing of the old thread.. if the question remains the same "Which camera?" keeping everything together will get you better advice..

The 40D is a very nice camera, I used one for four or five years, but your friend is right that it doesn't have the best high ISO performance. But equally, you don't have the budget for the latest full-frame with see-in-the-dark capabilities. One advantage the 40D does have is that it's a semi-pro body, it's got a control layout that's more intuitive and easier to learn with than an entry-level body - ie. it has separate dials for aperture and shutter speed, whereas on an entry-level body you're typically having to use the same button for both with either press-and-turn or press-this-turn-that to get the second control. It's also very solidly built.

You've talked about newborn/birth and now portraits, have you a certain style your aiming for? We'll happily talk you to death discussing gear/equipment here but it helps to know what you're aiming for..

I appreciate that, I shouldn't have made a new one! I'll go back to my other one, feel free to close this one! And thank you for your reply.

A kindly mod might be able to merge the various threads. I've flagged this for attention to see if it's possible.
