On the front of my 450D kit lens it states 58mm so I presume it's 58mm filters that fit?
On my Tamron 70-300mm it doesn't state anything so I can't work out what size filter fits :(
I want to get a UV filter and I understand the use for a UV filter but can some please explain the need / use of other type of filters?
Sorry for the newbie questions, one day I will get the hang of all this DSLR malarky.

If you look on the back of the lens cap it will tell you what size it is eg 72,77 this is the filter size.

As for other filters the most common is the CP ( circular polarizer ) generally used for reducung glare and giving skies a bit more saturation in landscape shots though it can be used for other things. Personally I only use uv filters but there is always the debate of whether you actually need them or not, I use them mainly to protect the lens.

UV filters to protect the front element if you feel its necessary (I personally don't use them unless it's a mucky environment). Polariser can be useful for getting more 'punchy' skies, and reducing reflections etc.

I've seen several people/places now saying that's all you need, as the effect of other filters can be satisfactorily done in post processing (eg bracketing and HDR to replace ND grad filters). It's also cheaper :P

Thanks for the advice :)
