Need advice please for a friend, would the filters he used years ago for film, still work with todays digital equipment. I told him I don't see why not, but thought I'd better check.
 
I'm using the red and organge and ND filters successfully I used for film, but dont think you can use polarising filters made for film.

Specifically - you can't use polarisers designed for manual focus cameras, the stop the AF system working.
 
If your friend has a polarising filter that fits a lens it is definitely worth a try as polarisers are not cheap.

I have just tried a Photax polarising filter that I bought between 25 and 30 years ago on my DSLR and the autofocus works perfectly.

You can't use a linear polarising filter with an autofocus camera (well, supposedly. I've never tried), but you can use a circular polariser.
 
Other than grads and polarisers, what filters that your friend still has from his film camera days would have any use with digital?

I try not to introduce another piece of glass infront of my lenses.
If protection is what you are looking for, I prefer a lenshood and
always use one.

My old polariser worked fine on my D2Xs and it wasn't a circular one

Obviously the advice now is to buy the newer circular type, but if you have an old one just try it first, you never know :)

Or - just focus manually like we all used to do anyway !!!

He mentioned colour, grads, starbursts, and special effects whatever they may be. I suggested if he was desperate to use them rather than bin them and get some more, was to look for some old FD lenses and an adaptor and use them on those. I explained he wouldn't be able to use the auto focus, just manual. I also suggested that he could maybe do what he desired in post processing, but with me not being an expert not too sure.
