A few questions regarding filters...

1. do you keep a different set of filters for all your lenses (the different filter sizes)?

2. do you have a standard filter that you use to protect the front of the lens?

3. what are the standard filters that you keep?

Thanks in advance :)

may I also add (I was thinking of starting a new thread, but this one seems a good place), does a UV filter have much chance of ruining IQ? Some people say they will not use them because of this chance, whereby when I started, I was told that it is a good idea to use a UV filter to protect the front of the lens.

A couple of questions regarding filters...

:)

h'mmm i count 3 questions ;)

so to answer the 3

1> no , i use slot in filters and then all i need do is keep a variety of adaptor rings to suit the lens filter size ..
i only have 1 screw in filter a ND 6 stop in 77mm and stepping rings for smaller lens filter threads..

2> yes a hoya pro1 digital uv ..

3> circular polarizer, ND in 1-3 stop flavour, ND grad in 1-3 stop flavour

I use a square filter system and just have different sized adaptors.
I don't use protective filters any more as I did experience some image degradation, even with Hoya. I use my lens hood now to protect from knocks.
There have been reports of others experiencing problems with skylight and UV filters on the front of their lenses. The numbers are small and given how many people who use them, a very low percentage.
The only filters I keep now are NDs and a circular polariser.

edited, just for you ;)

1. sounds like a good idea, will go have a look
2. and these will not "damage" the shot in anyway? or is there a bit of compromise to save the lens?
3. thank you

2> a good quality uv filter such as a hoya pro has very little / no impact on image quality .
i keep 1 on my long lens when doing rallying ,just in case
i have found when taking photos in low light with for example street lights in the scene a filter on the lens tends to increase the chance of getting flare in the shot..

if you have a look here you'll find a bit of info RE uv filters and image quality..

 what's it made of ,gold ?

hells bells £ 11.95 . thats a hell of a price, you can get them for half of that or less..

but yes thats a stepping ring .

Will look around for the step up ring.

Thanks for all the help! much appreciated :) More stuff on my list of things to buy!

On the subject of filters, I bought a Hoya UV 77mm filter for £40 to use as a lens protector on my 17-55 f2.8. Would I have been better spending an extra £15 and getting the SHMC PRO-1 filter? Is there likely to be any noticeable difference between the two in real world use?
