My dad used to do a touch of photography when i was a nipper and he has just given me some old filters and id like to get some more.

the problem is its a 52mm thread that fits on my d40 which is good but the filters are square and slot into the end of the filter holder any one know what size/standard this is called so i can get some more

They could be a range of makes and sizes, do the filters have any numbers on them? such as P121 or anything if you get chance measure one and we might be able to help narrow it down,

Probably Cokin A or P series. You have a threaded adaptor to the size you need that mounts a plastic square holder into which you slide the filters.

Camera shops, online sellers and ebay will have what you need. A lot of the 'effects' filters are a bit redundant with digital but some (like ND plain and graduated) can be useful.

well the filter i do have has a1 printed on the top left corner
