Can anyone advise me on which lee filter system i will need for 17-40 f4 L on 5D for landscapes using ND GRADS, and where the best deals are to be had.
To avoid vignetting at 17mm you need to use the 77mm wide angle lens adaptor (around £30) . You can see some examples of vignetting with the 5D/17-40 combo in this thread (using the standard lens adaptor instead of the wide).
As for deals most places use the Lee rrp so the more important thing to check is availablity as Lee can take 3-4 weeks to ship stock if the shop you use is out of stock. You'll find that on eBay the Lee stuff goes for almost new prices or more than new in the case of ND grads because people don't understand the different sets there are.
I got a lot of my stuff second hand off US internet forums so it's worth keeping an eye open.
A very important point to remember is that , if you want to use a polarising filter with any others (grads etc) you must put the pol filter in front of all the others, which means you can't use an existing pol filter which you may have, and put the Lee (or any other system for that matter) in front of the pol one, so you have to buy the Lee one, which is expensive, unfortunately.
I will check with Lee who keeps the best stock in their opinion. (I supply them so it isn't a problem, just may take some time)
In some situations, on the sigma 10-20 I still get some vignetting from the lee filter holder itself, wide open and at certain focal lengths. I probably need to take of one of the filter holder slots.
As for the grads themselves......soft ND for normal landscapes and hards for the seascape stuff I guess. I went for the soft ones as I can use them at the coast as well, although not quite so well.
