sorry if this is a daft question but dslr are new to me,i have the 350 with kit lens plus the 70-300 zoom do i need to stick with the sony brand polarized filter or are the hoya brand any good

As long as the filter thread size is right, any brand filter will fit. I wouldn't recommend buying dirt cheap ones though.

Good filters are very expensive. Try an ebay search and you will find the Hong Kong stores are pretty reasonable.

You need a 58mm filter which will fit both of your lenses. Any brand 58mm will fit but, many of the products are pretty bad - unfortunately, the cheap filters are usually the bad ones. An inferior filter will degrade your image. The amount the filter will degade the image depends on just how bad the filter is. Good filters are fairly expensive but, you dont want to shoot your images through the bottom of a Coca Cola bottle.

Make sure that the polarizer you obtain is a circular polarizer (CPL). There are still some linear polarizers floating around and, although cheaper, they generally cannot be used on DSLR's.

Fortunately, the 58mm size is not terribly large and you should be able to get a good deal on either a B&W or Hoya Pro filter from hvstar.

Both the B&W line and the Hoya Pro filters are very good with IMO the edge slightly going to the German Schneider B&W filters because they seem to clean more easily. However, Hoya has advertised a new coating which is easier to clean.

The Hong Kong based hvstar is a very reputable supplier and will get the filter to you quite quickly.
