Filter Kit Help - Identification

As an impulse buy i have bought this

No all i have to do is work out why I actually needed these!

I would love for you guys to help me learn what they are for and maybe post examples if you have used them already.

The list is as follows,

SAFETY FILTER - To protect the lens a cut out glare
SEPIA - Tint, for older style photographs
N.D FILTER - To extend shutter time (for waterfalls, blurred walking)
F.D FILTER - Lighter version of the above?
DIFFUSER - To soften skin tones in portraits?
SOFTONE - Same as above?
SPL SOFTTONE - Same as above?
DUTO -
SAND -
SOFT -
STAR X4 -
STAR X8 -
RED - For B&W to boost .......
BLUE - For B&W to boost .......
ORANGE - For B&W to boost .......
YELLOW - For B&W to boost .......
GREEN - For B&W to boost .......
CLOSE-UP +1 +2 +4 - As the name states (bugs, water droplets)
MACRO LENS - Flowers, bugs?
DOUBLE EXPOSER -
TWO-FIELD LENS -
VERI-CROSS -
L.PL FILTER -
MULTI-IMAGE LENS -
A SECOND MULTI IMAGE -
RAINBOW 8X -

Now then, those are what I believe to be true (probably wrong). I would be forever grateful if you would copy my list and add what you can to it, repost it and hopefully between us we can help other users too.

I havent a clue why anyone would need a 'double exposer' or when you would use it...

Those are the sort of thing you bought to try and get creative with your film camera. Most of them are pretty redundant now with digital picture editing.

The ND might be useful if you want a shot of movement blurred water etc. The close up lenses might also be useful for bug pictures if the quality is good enough but the rest are not really any use at all.

If you want to play with filters that are useful get yourself a Cokin P holder or similar and some ND grads. The other must have filter not on that list is a circular polariser which will control glare and make lovely blue skies when the sun is in the right direction.

Thanks for the info - The polariser and the macros are the main reason i bought the kit

I like street photography, so blurring people is a main task...

Circular polariser eh? Ill look into that

I have finally recieved my Circ. Polariser and well.... my godness - it make such a difference!

Looks like your lens might be a shade too wide for filters.
You might have to zoom a little to be rid of the filter ring edges.....if it does zoom that is

Yup, 17-85mm lens.. its only a few mm to get rid of it.

The barrel distortion will not be as easy to get rid of.

Are you talking about this black ring around the picture? if so, it is easy - I have tried it

On 19mm you cannot see the 'ring'
