I have been asked to compile a list of things that I would like Santa to bring me this year ;) and I think it's about time I moved into the world of filters - not just the screw in ones that I have now.

So, any advice on the best to get, glass or plastic? I've seen so many adverts in the magazines for filters but to be honest I'm not too sure what I need. Is it just a case of filter holder clamping onto the lens and then slotting in a filter as required?

Advice much appreciated. Thanks

Comes in handy this picture..

That is the Cokin P system.

you buy a ring to screw on to your lens thread (my lens is big at 77mm) then the plastic holder clips on to the ring, and the filters themselves slide in to grooves in the holder. The gradient filters for darkening a bright sky can slide up and down so the change is where you want.

Some people say Cokin give a colour cast to the image but I've not seen it. There are other brands with similar systems but Cokin is one of the cheaper options.
