Hi everyone,

Lately I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to films that deal with photography in a more realistic and grounded way. Not the glossy or romanticised version, but stories where photography feels like a real practice - with its routines, doubts, ethical questions, and quiet obsessions.

What I enjoy most is when photography isn’t just a visual element, but something that clearly shapes how the characters think and interact with the world.
Here are some of the films I’ve watched so far:

Finding Vivian Maier
The Salt of the Earth
Bill Cunningham New York
Blow-Up

Some of these are documentaries, others are fictional, but all of them try — in different ways — to reflect the mindset and everyday reality of photographers, rather than just the final images.
While looking for more, I also came across a couple of film-by-tag lists:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_about_photographers
https://bestsimilar.com/tag/104-photographer
As usual with these kinds of lists, it’s not always obvious which films genuinely engage with photography and which just touch the surface.
I’d be interested to hear your recommendations. Are there any films — documentary or fiction — that you feel really capture what it’s like to live and work as a photographer? Lesser-known titles are very welcome.

You should try to find a copy of the miniseries "Frankie's House" which tells the story of Sean Flynn and Tim Page, who were photojournalists in Vietnam. It's gritty and very realistic. I have a copy, I watch from time to time as I knew someone who was working there off and on at the time.

There's a film on Amazon prime about Helmut Newton, though I've not watched it yet.

We'll Take Manhattan

and

Looking For Light - Jane Bown

Should be 'must watch' for anyone.
