Hi,

I'm filming some footage around a racetrack this autumn, which means I need to man-up and buy a proper mic for this (finally, having replaced my 500D with a 5D2) - last time I shot I didn't have one and the footage was OK, but the sound was tragic.

From threads on here I'm thinking Rode VideoMic with the Rycote Lyre Mount and that dead-kitten thing they do to cut wind-noise.

I also have access to a Zoon H2 sound recorder. Recording sound separately isn't something I've played with before. The one (slightly childish) thing I'd like to capture on some of the shots is the cars passing through the stereo field, from one side, to the other. What chance do I have of getting that from the H2 (is stereo) or the shotgun (is directional and won't capture that sort of dynamic transition, or am I wrong?).

If people do suggest using the Zoom H2, how do I rig this up please?

Sorry for the slightly numpty-esque questions - this is all a bit advanced vs what I've done before!

Many thanks for any advice and guidance!!

The shotgun would capture the doppler shift. You could then add pan info in audacity or similar.

However, keeping the shotgun pointed at a fast car may be more of an issue.

Adding the pan of sound across the stereo field is a bit out of what I WANT to be doing in post!

Thinking Rode Stereo VideoMic now.

Pro or 'not Pro'?
