Assuming the slide is fully functional (lightproof) as long as it would be safe in its original packaging.
My boss used to test his darkslides by cutting up some printing paper and putting the pieces in the slides, then leaving them in the window for a day or three. When he put them in developer and left them for ten minutes or so, if they stayed white, the slides were considered safe.
