Hello all :)

First Post here and i am wanting to ask what Film SLR you would recommend to a beginner. I have been using a Pentax MZ-M at school, which is what im thinking of buying.

I want it to be auto, but also manual so i can change Aperture, Shutter Speed.

I dont have a strict budget, but would want it as cheap as possible so that i can think about buying a new SLR later in the year.

So far ive found for £145 (i would rather less though) a pentax MZ-M with 3 lenses which consist of 28mm, 50mm, 70-210mm.

Any other ideas of cameras to look at that you would recommend?

Thanks in Advance

Firstly, welcom to the forum!

Personally, I would think ahead with the idea that at some stage you're going to want to switch to digital...I would therefore invest in either Canon or Nikon as the lenses and flash ect should will also work on a digital SLR if you are careful what you choose. In 35mm, I have a Canon EOS300 and i think they are going for around £140 secondhand if not cheaper...Its a consumer grade camera, and feels touch "plasticy" but it works well enough and never gave me any problems...

Regards,

Pete

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've been having a look at the EOS 300's and i was close to buying one a few hours ago.

Im not sure what lenses to look at though. I mostly want a 28-80 or 55mm and maybe (if i can get one in budget) a 100/200mm lens but thats not needed just yet.

What would you recommend?

Syk3

I can only speak about Canon, but I would look at the 28-105mm USM if your budget will stretch to that..they did a kit lens which I think was the 35-80mm and while that will certainly get you started, I think the 28-105mm is generally considered better quality..You could also get a cheap 50mm F1.8..for the money they seem to get really good reviews although the later 50mm F1.4 is of better build quality but about 5x the price! An 50mm F1.8 will usually go for somewhere in the £50 to £80 range...

I also have a 55-200mm and although it works well enough, the build quality is for from the best...but again it good enough to get you going...

Regards,

Pete

I found a cheap(ish) kit which is the Canon EOS 300, Hoya 58mm Skylight filter, Hoya 58mm PL-CIR filter, 2 unused CR2 batteries, 4 x 36exp 100 35mm, 3 x 24exp 400 35mm.

But, not sure whether i should try look for a kit with a larger lens?

Syk3

If you are interested I have an EOS 300 with 35-80mm lens that was going to go on Ebay.

What were you going to do with it on ebay, Buy it Now or anything like that?

What price were you looking for?

good luck.

The 28-90 or 35-80 kit lenses would be good at first, and the 50 1.8 is a great lens on my 350D, so I'm sure it will also be great on the 300. If you do go with Canon you'll have the added bonus of AF and the ability to upgrade easily. Currently the 300D is around £300 used, so in a few years you'll probably be able to pick on up for around £200.

Have fun! How old are you btw?

(not in a p***-ish way - I'm only 16 :D)

Yeah, my Digital SLR will be a D50 in a few months (maybe more) once i get used to the aspects of photography first.. Aperture etc.

Ive had a look at the 300D's actually, my uncle just recently replaced that with a 30D.

Im 16 too btw :)

If you are looking to get a D50 in the future maybe a second hand Nikon F series would suit you.

I have an F65 and a 28-100G lens which are sitting around doing not a lot at the moment...

I would agree with namllihs..if your looking at a D50, get a used Nikon F series that way you won't be wasting money as your lenses ect will be compatable..

If you are getting a D50, then it would probably be a good idea to start with a Nikon, so you can still use the lenses with your D50 then :)

Have a look Here in the 'special offers' dept.

Thats the place ive started to use ;)

For my first Film SLR, i will be buying Used to save money for lenses and later upgrades to Digital etc.

What do you guys think of the Canon EOS 5?

Regards

Adam

Cool..ive found:

Canon EOS 5 with:

* 7 Rolls of 35mm film
* Canon Speedlite 300EZ external flash gun
* Canon 50mm AF lens
* Tamron 200mm - 400mm AF Zoom lens
* Sigma 28mm - 200mm AF Zoom lens (needs attention)
* Cleaning cloth and airbrush
* Instruction manual
* Canon EOS 5 Shoulder strap
* Jessops camera carrying bag
* Lens caps and rear covers etc

What sort of price do you recon the lot is worth ? So i know what i should look at to pay.

Adam

looking at completed listings an EOS 5 body is between £55 and £88,
with a lens £100+

Ive narrowed the cameras down to:

Canon EOS 5
Canon EOS 500
Canon EOS 300
Pentax MZ-M

Also; if i was to buy one of the Canon's what is this lens like? Sigma 70-210mm Canon FD Fit Lens F4-5.6 Just wondering because a friend is offering it to me for £30inc.

Adam

If it is FD fit it will not fit an EOS body

Ah ok.

If i was to get an EOS 300 - would it be a good choice for a beginners camera?

Atm, theres a Canon EOS 500 + 35-80mm + 75-300mm lens but im not sure whether the EOS 500 is good for a starter camera.

Ive been offered various EOS 300's but im not sure whether it would be a good start?

Adam

The FD range of lenses were for earlier manual focus Canons and as already mentioned won't work/won't fit with an EOS body, which is autofocus and needs Canon lenses which prefixed with "EF"....

Try this.

The EOS300 replaced the EOS500 and I think the EOS300 has better metering ect...The EOS5 was a more upmarket model when it came out and probably has a better build quality than the EOS300, but the EOS300 is newer and incorperates certain improvements that were developed overt the years...

Oh, okay thats great thanks :)

Im pretty much fixed between 2 cameras now.

Ive decided i wont use the MZ-M because i can always borrow it from school.

The two cameras im deciding between are;

Canon EOS 300
Nikon F65

What would you guys recommend out of the two?

Im slightly on the fence, the reason for the F65 is because im thinking about getting a D50 later on.

Whereas the EOS 300 will be a good start for my photography.

Adam

Even though my digital and film cameras are all Canon, in your situation I would go for the Nikon F65.

If you really are set on the D50, the F65 or some other Nikon SLR does make more sense...

Its not 100% that i am going for a D50, but it does seem like a very nice camera.

Out of the two, which is better? F65 or EOS 300?

Adam

You trying to start a forum war asking questions like that??:D :D

I can't help you there as i have never had a Nikon f65....

Haha nah, im just wondering really.. Because tbh i dont mind having lenses that wont go on the D50 if i do ever buy one because i can just simply replace them quite easily.

So future lenses is not a problem unless i buy a good lens obviously.

From reviews ive heard they are about equal which is why i asked you :)

I have not used a Nikon F65 but the specs look similar to the EOS 300.

To be honest; alot of you have said the EOS 300 and ive decided i guess thats the way to go.

Ive had many offers for one and just looking through a couple of them, but i just found this on ebay. I will need to buy a smaller lens aswell as this one though but what about this for £107.50?

1. Camera body (Canon EOS 300)
2. Sigma 28-200mm f 1:3.5-5.6 DL Hyperzoom Macro Aspherical IF lens
3. Sigma Lens Hood
4. Canon EOS original strap
5. Canon EOS 300 original manual booklet
6. UV Filter Fox Talbot 72mm
7. Canon RS60-E3 original Remote / Cable Release
8. Oyster 3000 Camera Bag

Adam

Okay guys..Im definately ready to buy today..or tomorrow.

So if you could give me your final ideas of what camera to get id be very grateful.

So far the EOS 300 seems to the favourite.

Adam

Bit O/T but what Film would you buy?

I need 400 ASA, 35mm, B+W. Ive been told Ilford. It needs to be ordinary B+W iirc as we are not developing in colour chemicals.

Adam

Just purchased a EOS 300 with a 28-80 Autofocus lens, with 0.38mm/1.3ft macro capability. 1:2.5-5.6 lens.

What extras would you recommend to get?

Lenses..
Cases..

Etc.
