hi all,new to this site
i have some nice nikon film gear i want to carry on using, mainly b&w with some infared but no time for a full dark room setup ,can anybody recomend a film scanner that will run on vista,i have a minolta scanner but no drive are out there for it to run on vista
Dont want to break the bank

Epson V500 or V700 are very good film scanners, not the cheapest though.

If they're too expensive the previous generation 4490 and 4990 are pretty much just as good.

would a flat bed scanner do the film justice, was thinking of a dedecated film scanner but are few and far between, there again a flatbed could be used for medium format ,prices are dropping fast so my invest
thank you for a promt repley

Epson makes some very good scans but, as weiran said, they are not the cheapest. I have a Canon 8800F and I think it's very good for the price. One of the best options if you don't want to spend too much.

just had a look at prices for the epson at werehouse express for the v500 at £215 is not bad,but would shop around

Dedicated film scanners are getting rare now, there's not a huge market for them any more so they tend to be very high end and exotic.

Amazon have the V500 for under £200.

just looked on google ,seem to be betwen £170 and £215 for the v500,would prefer to buy local so will look around
Any body scanned infared on any type of scanner

There should be an option in Vista to run programs as if on earlier versions of Windoze, e.g. XP. Try it and you might find your XP driver will work. Just a suggestion....

Or try Vuescan. The list of supported scanners is here. You can download a free trial of the software and if it works buy it for $40. I haven't used it myself but by all accounts it is first rate.

I have Epson RX520, Rx620 and 4870. getting old now but still great.

Google "Vuescan" works with most scanners and is free for basic version.
It certainly works with Vista and my Konica Minolta 5400 11.

just looked into it it as i have a load of old slides i want to digitise
however vuescan will only scan film and slides if the supported scanner has a light in the scanner lid (which mine doesnt :( )

How can you scan slides without light passing through them ?
I vaguely remember someone trying a flatbed with white paper or plastic behind slide on a flatbed.
Didn't work !!!!

I've just picked up a Plustek 7600i SE.. around £250 from Amazon.

Good results, and the software integrates well with Photoshop (I'm using CS4)

How do you find the Plustek 7600i SE I bought one and the scans had massive faults. They replaced it and the other was horrendous too. Light blue sky was coming out with bits of red/brown in it......

It's pretty good, now I've worked out a workflow for using it, and discovered the Silverfast Photoshop plug-in for launching scanning, which seems to give better colours than the TWAIN interface (it's calibrated to Adobe RGB colourspace).

I do a scan at 2400 dpi on the Standard colour balance setting, without selecting the auto colour/exposure button. I then save the resulting Photoshop file (this is my "digital master" that I can return to it later for adjustments), apply auto colour, and adjust the levels.

Here's a couple I did earlier:

scan2.jpg

Both were from Kodachrome slides, which are apparently pretty difficult to colour balance (they tend to scan with a blue cast). The second pic shows how the scanner copes with strong shadows - I tweaked the colour balance on this one to add a little more yellow, as contrasty outdoor shots tend to come out a little on the cool side.

(I haven't used any dust reduction on either of these.. I'd prefer to do this myself using Photoshop tools and a rocket blower!)

For 250 squids, I'm well pleased!

its a dimage ,two 11

Viewscan works with all Minolta scanners I use it with the Dimage dualscan 11 no problems at all. I also use it with my canon 8600 and little Epson SX218

It has worked with everything I have tried it with.
