I've spent most of today on a factory tour at Ilford. I would thoroughly recommend it!

Learnt so much my brain may burst with all the chemistry and machines I've seen. I now know exactly how the film canisters are produced and filled with film! 35mm is a right complicated faff and takes about 4 different machines at least. The 120 is one antiquated old thing with a light tight box where it all gets shoved together. They now have cartridge making gear from both Agfa and Ferrania as they couldn't get cartridges.

Next issue they seem to have is surfactant suppliers taking the mickey with prices.

Their printing is also done on proper black and white paper not the colour paper, even the digital sources. They had a sample from a phase one digital back. It was about 4 feet wide. Looked awesome. Apparently Bailey was well chuffed as it meant all his old negs could be scanned and new prints made without needing to print them in a dark room.

They also do their b & w developing with a proper dip and dunk refrema machine. Looks standard b & w developing is £6.50 dev only and that includes freepost and return normal first class postage which seems pretty reasonable. Turn around is quoted as a few days so quite quick too.

The cutting and packing of the paper is a site to behold. Like an army of moles with orange lights. They were also doing photographic paper for a customer on 30 m long rolls.

They have a mini version of the main film and paper coating machine. They test out new ideas on it.

They did mention xp2 is really good for scanning as you can use ICE with it which you can't with other B & W film. Also that the Agfa slide film is definitely re-badged fuji.

Buffet was good too. Toffee sponge cake was champion :D

I'd planned to go to this but was broadsided by loads of work at uni, glad someone from F&C went on a recon mission for us all :D

It isn't yet. I suspect they may make it more regular. I only found out about it via Red Eye which is a photographic organisation. They organise quite a few events and the Ilford tour was one. They have done 3 this year. One for the APUG site, one via social media and this one involving Red Eye.

There was free food and a goodybag... how on earth is that less important than uni work???

Sounds great i hope they do make it more regular i'd love to go

It's worth travelling for. There is a lot of walking and standing and stairs. A lot of the rooms vary wildly in temperature so clothing choices are problematic. It's better to be too cold than too warm. I got way too hot.

Yeah i'd much rather be a bit colder there than hot, i wouldn't want to pass out, that would be embarrassing!... stairs, eek! as long as they have handrails i'm ok... dodgy joints and a phobia of stairs and escalators (also embarrassing).. still, it would be worth it for all that information

wow....sounds awesome.

Would love to go, but with stairs and lots of walking doesn't sound as if it's possible with a disability.

Sounds like you had an amazing time Suz..... I'm partial to a bit of toffee sponge cake myself

I don't think it is to be honest. There's no wheel chair access and it takes quite a while to get round everywhere. Most they could do is probably increase sitting down times between areas.

I went back in 2005. It's an excellent tour.

Did you come away with a selection of goodies?

Sounds awesome! Is this a standard tour you can just book?

Simon from Ilford usually advertises tours on the APUG forum. No more than one a year.

They have done 3 this year

That told me!

Got a goody bag with some film and some paper and a few other bits and pieces. I must examine it thoroughly!

I went round last week, was this another tour? :D

I am very jealous, that sounds an amazing day out and if we could arrange one I would defintely be up for that - The TP Ilford jolly?

I'm sure if there are enough of us interested, we could contact Simon Galley at Ilford to see if he could arrange something for us.

Steve.

There were about 30 odd people on this one so decent numbers are needed.

Sounds a really grand day out! I need to go there too now!

I would be up for a visit if numbers are required - live only down the road.

I'd definitely be up for this if we could arrange it.

Me too, its only 30 minutes from here.

Now there was me thinking they were based in Essex

They moved in the early 80s and it took a couple of years as they had to move all the machinery bit by bit...they wanted cleaner air so they went somewhere right next to an airport, still cleaner than Essex ;) You can wave at people taking off almost...

I'm sure I read on apug it's a chemical they use in XP2.

Typical londo-centric thinking there from the southern softie. All t'best things are up North.

I'd be very up for this also! Firstly for the awesomeness of it all, but also because I can then politely moan at them for not making panf in sheet format :D

I'm sure if you gave them a wodge of cash they'd run you off a batch :D
