Noob question.

My friend has a Canon 1000F film camera. I want to get them a gift for Xmas. I thought film would be nice, but I want to be sure I buy the right one. What is the right type of film? And is there an interesting film I could get them?

It takes 35mm film - not too much choice now. Given the time of year, I would go for 400 ISO film. I prefer black and white film which would probably be Ilford HP5 but Fomapan 400 has a slightly more old fashioned look. As for colour film, I have no idea.

Personally, in 35mm, I prefer Kodak Tri-X for black and white. But HP5 is fine, as is Ilford Delta 400 and Kodak T-Max 400

Lots of people seem to really like Kodak Portra 400 for colour.

That's just mean... buy them a £10 gift they have to spend £30 to get developed!!! :-)

Christmas gifts are often a PITA and some 'obvious' interest like photography is often source for inspiration; trouble IS film choice is one that is often very personal and very subject specific.
Every christmas I used to get 'bumper bundles' of Boots 200ASA print film of people; who geuinely believed I would really really apreciate it, becaue that was what they would put n thier camera.
Fact I would have to pay to get the film processed, when I mostly shot bulk loaded slide film, which I could develop at home in the kitchen, to SAVE developing costs, never entered thier mind!
As any specialized hobby, you are often best off asking them explicitly what they want, to avoid getting something they wont really use or appreciate, for all the thought.
I mean, they may have a film camera... but do they use it? Do they want to use it, and if so, what for?
Do they do thier own Home processing? What are the currently 'improving'... believe me, we all do, whether its cloths pegs instead of hanging clips for dryng, or using old pop bottles for storing solutions instead of concertina bottles; or the clock on the cooker instead of a proper large display timer; there's always 'something' we could use to make our lives that bit easier, we wont buy for ourselves!
If they aren't dong thier own home processing, then maybe they would like to give it a go; maybe you ad a few others if the total cost is too high could club together to put together a Home Dev 'set' with a dev tank, changing bag, mixing measure, maybe some B&W dev chems and a couple of rolls of cheap film to 'experiment' with.
Conveniently plenty of individual items that ca be wrapped 'seperately' and offered from different people in that. (Was actually how I wa gven most of my 'Dark-Room' when I was at Uni, with the enlarger of my mum, and my little bothers each wrappng a developig tray or concertina bottle! Lol.. I was SO surprised...... after I'd gone and bought t all for mum to get them to wrap up!!!!")
Alternatively, what other generic phot parafanalia may they use? Not necesserily with film? Tripod? Studio screens? Reflectors? hot-shoe spirit level? Plenty of other acountrements they cold make use of or appreciate and aren't so obvious or potentially disappointing as the wrong sort of film...
What about gift vouchers for Developing? They can choose the 'best film' for whatever subject that interests them, then.

Depends on your budget really. There's lots to choose from. The Fuji superia 400 is pretty good. It's about £12 for 3 rolls.

Black and white I'd probably choose Ilford XP2. It can be processed in normal colour chemistry rather than needing black and white. Scans well too.

Tri-x is very nice though.

There's nothing wrong with Agfa vista either. Quid a roll when they have it in Poundland.

Filmdev develop for £3 a roll including small scan , £5 a roll with medium scan. There's also photo express in Hull.
