Hello,

Im sort of new to Photography at the moment and normally the film that i use, when developing it is in a unscrewable casing.

Since buying new film, i am stuck to how to open it in the dark bags.

It hasnt got a unscrewable top, so ive thought about ways to open it but all i have found is possibly sticking something sharp into the slot of which the film comes out of the cassette.

Sorry if its really noobish :lol:

You're using 35mm film, right?
If so, just prise the lid of the can off with a bottle opener - or even a screwdriver. Or even your bare hands, as the metal is very thin.

It's usually only reusable cannisters that have screw tops, I think.

While we're talking about film, does anybody know if there's a crafty way I can get my F80 to not wind the leader back into the can?

I think you're snookered without a manual rewind crank. With a rewind crank you can feel that moment when the film leader comes off the take up spool and stop winding.
 
Indeedy, I thought as much - it's no biggy, just thought there might be a sneaky way of doing it :D
I've been using various manual Nikon's & my F80 a lot lately, and I do prefer a manual rewind crank..

If you put your ear to the camera back as it's rewinding you can often hear the end of the film comming off the winder spool. Pop the back open once you've heard it and most cameras stop winding back and there's your leader.

Get a little twitchy and jump the gun though and it's not so clever. ;)
 
Blimey, this takes me back. 20 years ago I would open hundreds of 35mm spools each day when I worked in a lab.

Some of the larger companies such as Kodak used to make a gagdet for opening the canisters that was pretty much a small bottle opener. In the lab we had a bench with a metal edge that we used, line the lip up with the edge and push down, same as opening a beer I guess.

We did used to get bulk canisters that didn't unscrew but these could be opened just by squeezing the sides a bit and the end would pop off. Took a bit of practice but soon became 2nd nature.
 
I'm sure I used to have a gadget to retrieve the film leader out of the canister, got it from Jessops.

Ingenioius little device by Hama, but there's a definite knack to using it and on the occasions I've had to use it in anger I've always had to practice on an old film first.

That's the one and you're right, it was a bit of a b****r to use at first but I got the knack of it in the end.

there might be a cfn (nikon equivalent) that allows you to do that. my 1n lets you do it so its not unreasonable to suggest
