Being new to digital photography I am confused by picture size and file size.:shake:

Took two photos within 10secs of each other, with the same camera and with the same settings.

When loaded into the PC the image properties were different.

Pic one.....800x783 pixels, file size...636.7kb.

Pic two.....2576x1932 pixels, file size...1.4mb.

:thinking::cuckoo:

It looks like the JPEG size was changed somewhere.
It could have been on the camera or when you transferred the photos to the PC.
I can have 3 JPEG sizes on my camera: Large 3008*2000 pixels, Medium 2256*1496 pixels & Small 1504*1000 pixels.
See if your camera gives an option for 800*783 pixels, if so then it was probably the camera settings, if not then it was probably during the transfer.

What camera do you have, is it new, or second hand (has someone changed the settings before you)
Some cameras have a 'one shot' button. After pressing this, the next shot is taken with special settings.
Often, it is used to bump up the resolution for a special shot. I use it to reduce the quality of a shot if I just want it for reference.

Raw+jpeg? Is one a raw file and the other a small jpeg of the same image?

there's definitely something wrong with the first one - pictures are typically either in a 3x2 or 4x3 ratio - the 2576x1932 implys that it's 4x3 in this case. A 4x3 ratio picture would be 800x600 (or 1044x783 :shrug:) so the first file must be a crop from the actual file, a broken file, or the result of some form of in-camera editing
