File size in iPhoto after Editing...Why is it reducing?

I upload all my photos into iPhoto and just noticed that when i do anything to them in the edit mode it slashes the file size by about 75%!!
For example, i just did one blob of 'retouch' and the file size went from 11.5MB to 2.5 MB!!!
I took the original photo in RAW and i thought that stopped the size and quality of the image degrading???

Is this normal??

I have found this as well. I emailed some pictures to my parents and I noticed that it said the images were the same size my 'RAW' was but a Jpeg. I can only assume when you start to edit the RAW in iphoto it immediately processes it into Jpeg format.

Someone correct me if im wrong?
