Hello all

On Photoshop elements a photo (1600 x 1200) shows me a file size of 5.49 mega bytes in info. Canon Zoom Browser software tell s me the photo is 819 kilo bytes.

They can;t both be right, too huge a difference.

Please help.

I suspect they're not looking at the same photo.

It could be that CZB is looking at a preview or thumbnail that's been created? Do you shoot raw+jpeg?

My suggestion would be to open the image in both bits of software. *usually* there's a "show file in Explorer" or something similar which will open an explorer window showing you the physical location of the file. I would expect each program to show you a different location.

Are they showing the same file type? The default on PS is usually tiff which can be much bigger than jpeg

I suspect that the image file is the larger figure when open in the app, and the smaller figure when stored on disc, if it's a jpg?

Compressed v. uncompressed sizes... Elements will show the uncompressed size.

Compressed v. uncompressed sizes....
This. The JPEG file is 819 kB of compressed data, but when it's uncompressed (as it must be to make it viewable) it occupies 5. 49 MB of memory. That implies a compression ratio of around 7:1, which is quite typical for high quality JPEGs.
