Edit My Images
Yes
I've just got back from camera club having found out that the club has never before had any images chosen by fiap and we've got 3, of which 2 are mine!
No one seems to know much about what happens now (as its not happened before) and given my usual lack of success in club competitions it's even more amazing - I don't take pictures that get votes usually....
So, anyone know anything about it?
Obviously I've googled their Web pages and know they run a club 'world cup' so I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what the process is..

Someone in your club will know. I have involvement with FIAP in that they are one of the patrons for our international Salon. I know there is a World Cup but our club has not entered This year it was won by a Belfast Club. So someone in your club must have entered a submission. For international Salons, an acceptance means you may use that in support of a FIAP distinction. Another source to find out more about FIAP is the PAGB website.

We had someone in our club many years ago telling us about FIAP. Ben's definition is not far off, we have a few people hellbent on achieving higher distinctions within FIAP and getting letters like ARPS DPAGB EFIAP BPE2. Even at the lowest distinctions level of FIAP you are still going to have many many more acceptances in international salons globally. Well done on getting 2, if you are driven enough to keep going and getting more, do so.

Sounds too much like hard work to me, so I will stick with ATGNI.

What is wrong with striving to achieve a photographic distinction? Many are hard to achieve hence the greater feeling of achievement. It took me four attempts to gain DPAGB but I have now more or less given up on building on my FIAP distinctions. However, that is because of my age and health but I would encourage other photographers to have a go.

Nothing wrong, no need to get defensive. I just don't have that level of application and determination that some folk do.

Yeah, I was joking in my post. When I see someone with all those letters, I appreciate that someone has committed themselves to something - and probably spent a good bit of money doing it. In general, I don't appreciate the photography though

At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to.

For many photographers, if someone gets something from looking at the image, then the purpose has been achieved.

Sorry for missing @Phil V's link

Its one of several ways of gaining 'Distinctions' so you can tell your mum/wife/pals how good you are, a bit like PGAB awards

Bizarrely, its all about doing well in 'Salons', with 'Acceptances', the more Acceptances you get the better your award

What's really weird is that you can have 100 Acceptances by sending the SAME image and it being 'Accepted' in 100 Salons; so your apparent genius can rest on having very few really good images

Oh and it can cost thousands of £s in entry fees to get the higher awards, and take a decade to do so

I'd suggest you be happy with them choosing your images, but to spend your time & money shooting for fun rather than these types of Distinctions :)

Brilliant, what an excellent reply!
I'm a club member for the social side rather than any desire to win competitions, and don't care at all about awards (although it is a bit flattering in it's way)
I'll stop signing photos for sale, and cancel the world dominance tour...

For FIAP distinctions, you are limited to using the same image only a few times and have to enter different Salons and different countries. You would only have to spend thousands if you were not very successful. You all seem to miss the point that although it may take some years to gain several distinctions, this suits many as it gives them an additional drive to their photography as well a producing images which please themselves. It seems strange that many on this forum do not like competitions but TP runs many competitions.

I'm not against competitions in general, but the photographs in the Salons / FAIP comps that I've been exposed to are very homogenised. I have my doubts over whether the photographer is making photographs to please themselves or the judges.. imo anyone wanting to find their photographic voice / language should avoid them at all costs. but each to their own

Just to check I have looked at my Clubs international FIAP salon accepted entries for 2024 and the range of subjects and styles are enormous. The subjects include; Industrial, sports, indigenous people, Patterns, creative, documentary, street, action, Night, nature, portraits and unusual landscapes. These are entries from 33 countries so how anyone could use the word "homogenised" suggest that you have not looked at an international Salon. Photographers in other countries interpret potential subjects differently so it is unsurprising that the entries are NOT homogenised.
