Well, my aim is to get out more with my camera - so definitely want to give this a go.

Just finished my current Masters Degree (part time distance learning is hell:razz: ) module (only 3 more to go) so will be off to put a couple of ideas on current theme into practise.

Well I thought I might fall at the first hurdle - got a stinking cold (manflu really) and nearly didn't get chance to get out

This is Monk Bretton Priory - had to cope with very harsh sunlight and a local band having a photoshoot (just to the right of this shot)

Just a small crop and warmed up a touch

According to their website....

It was a daughter house of St Johns Priory for Cluniac monks, founded by Ilbert de Laci (de Lacy) near to his base at Pontefract Castle.

Well done on keeping detail on the wall in the shadow. So easy to loose when the sun is bright.

nice shot and they look like well kept ruins.
the only thing i'd say is that there seems to be quite a bit of detail lost in the shadow on the main wall. Pheraps this could be brought out in PP?

For difficult lighting conditions and suffering with the dreaded man-flu I think you've done really well.

Shame that the local band elbowed their way into your photoshoot though ;) because I think that a wider shot with more of the priory in shot would have worked better than just a small portion of it.
However, you've kept some good detail in the brickwork and maintained a strong sense of perspective with the line leading back into the frame. I can see this working well as a contrasty B&W.

Thanks for your nice comments - the intention was to do a moody B&W - but after seeing the sunlight it seemed a shame - maybe process it later this week to B&W - will post if I do.
I do have a couple of wider shots - but intend to reshoot this location when the light isn't as harsh

I like this shot, something about ruins in the sunshine ... Good detail throughout.

Thanks Tina

I was thinking on the same lines as sarah with regards to the black and white conversion. It looks like it's quite a photogenic building.

Thanks Michael - pretty lucky to have such a wonderful set of ruins 10 minutes from my door :). I always find it amazing to visit places like this and wonder what it would have been like. There is one wall, where the Prior's fireplace is about 10feet off the floor (i.e. second floor) and it just seems weird to see a fireplace fairly in tact at that height.

For week 2's theme I wanted to try something NEW, and incorporate the theme as well.

So I bought a reversing ring for my nifty a few months back and never really used it - so this extreme DOF technique was new to me.

This shot is taken with the 50 reversed and a 31mm extension tube- hope you like

Oh and it took me forever to find an old "New Pence" coin :D

Ian

I really love the coin shot and its a different take on the theme, the DOF is just right, well shot

Nice shot. Good focus on 'New Pence' What is intriguing about this shot is that because the DOF is so shallow, the OOF coins almost look like they are blurred because of camera shake, but the New Pence focus obviously contradicts that. I am wondering if a B&W conversion would add to the impact by having different contrasts rather than colours of the coins?

Hi

I like your coin shot too... def would be a new idea to me also a reversing ring...

I think for me the shot would have worked if you could have got a wee bit more DOF... How did you set the shot up?
