I am going to boardmasters festival on Thurs and I was planning on taking my DSLR but it seems that they are quite strict on taking professional photography equipment and whereas the term 'professional' is a bit vague, a D7000 with a flash gun probably wouldnt come under the category of point and shoot.

I requested a press pass but it is too late so I was thinking of taking my Nikon 1 with me just to get a few different creative sort of shots and perhaps take the D7000 to fistral beach which has no rules on photography so I can use it or the surf, bmx, skate etc.

Has anyone got any experience with shooting at festivals that sound quite strict? What is the chances that they will actually care what camera I have?

Probably depends on the festival...

If you try and walk through the gates with the camera around your neck with all accessories attached, they'll probably pull you up on it.
If it's just in a rucksack, doubt they'll really care.
Security tend to be on the lookout for more sinister (or fun!) things. A good tactic I found is to open your bag up before they ask, smile and know you're going to be let through :)
