Yes
So I'll start my 52 off with this shot.

tp-52-1.jpg

Looking at it now when I imported it into Aperture I could have done with more dof to make it look so much better. No chance of doing it now as my daughter as her friend over for a sleep over; I'll be shouted at quite a bit :naughty:

That's a great idea for this theme - I haven't seen anyone else doing this.
It's a nice pic with some sweet "little girl" colour.
I like the three little characters in the middle.
I agree that it needs a greater depth of field.
Good luck with the 52. Patrick

Nice idea David. For me could be a shade darker. Good luck with the next 51.

Week 2 - New

tp-52-2.jpg

OK really struggling this week to come up with NEW; so here we are NEW nail varnish and "NEW things that mummy lets me do...."

Bit noisy but lets hope I get better as the year rolls on.....

BTW how do I change the thread title? I'm missing something here :bonk:

Hiya David

go into edit your 1st post, click on Advanced & you can edit the title in there :-)

Like the thought behind your week 2 shot, though I have no idea how to it,a bit of color on the polish might look good? I call it color popping but I'm sure thats not the proper term...

2 down,50 to go,good luck

Cheers

Great colours in #1 and nice idea. The perspective's not what I would have shot, the inclusion on the lower floor doesn't sit right for me....

#2 is a nice tender moment. I'd prefer the photograph to actually show the nail varnish being applied. Initially I wasn't keen on the silhouette of the girl's face on the right, but after looking for a while I like it...

It would be nice if the thumb was in shot as well.

Cheers.

I really like the processing on the second shot. What did you do to get that effect, as it's got just the right amount of contrast for my taste :)

Nice shot in week two. Perhaps I'd have it a little sharper but I like the little bit of face that has snuck in on the right.
Good luck with the rest of the year!

Another nice shot. I like the soft focus which goes well with the subject. You've captured a tender moment very well.

I wasn't sure what was going on until I read your explanation.
The dark area on the right is slightly distracting.

Thanks for your comments;

The face on the right wasn't intentional but after I saw it I thought it was a nice touch - not to everyones taste but hey.

After you said I tried colour popping it but it was hard to get a good outline between the two, and with the colour being pink it looked really false; something to play with another day.

As for what processing; can't remember exactly but along the lines of b&w preset in Aperture then changed sharpness and vignette

Week 2 captures a tender moment and that pours through the capture - love that. I'm viewing on an iPad so I may be wrong about this but it seems a little out of focus. Apologies if I got that wrong. I would also have gone for colour given the nail varnish but that is just personal choice. I find the face on the right extremely distracting and personally i think this shot would have been better without it and with a vignette around it instead.

Just my 2 cents. Please check mine out too :)

Here we go, week 3; running out of time to try what I wanted as its been a hard week but this is something along the lines of what I was trying to do.

Week 3 - Style

tp-52-3.jpg

A boring interpretation as styl(e)ing hair; this one was different as it involved me setting up a plain background, purposely setting up objects (could have done with a few more?), trying to over-exposing to get a bit of a high key style from the camera and then add some PP to get to where I wanted. Anyway C&C much appreciated as compo is my biggest weakness atm :)

I love your B+W picture for week two, thats a lovely shot, as mentioned it has been processed well and is well captured :)

I like the idea behind week three, the only thing i would say is that with the white background the white bottle is merging slightly into it. I would maybe try a different coloured background just so the white bottle stands out (or change the bottle so that it is not white) :)

Hi David

I like your week 3 shot idea,perfect style:thumbs:
I actually like the fact the white bottle blends in to the background bbut maybe it could do with being a touch darker (bottle not back ground that is) not much, just enough to show definition. I'd also turn the smaller bottle slightly to lose the barcode & widen the crop so the end of the straightners is in frame .There's something going on along the base of the straightners too....shadows on the towel?

Don't mean to sound picky as I do really like it
goodluck with the next 49

Really like your 'new' shot the composition and subject are lovely and the b&w work well - a photograph to treasure.

I think your 'style' shot works really well - I particularly like the way the pink bottle is reflected in the dryer and the way you have arranged the items, perhaps, has others have said there is a slight problem with the white bottle merging with the background but I don't think it significantly detracts from the overall effect.

See what you mean about it being similar to mine - what can I say .....great minds think alike

Really liking that week 2 shot, it's got so much going for it, lovely feel to the shot, the black and white conversion really makes it I think.
Week 3 is a nice idea, the high key works well but perhaps taken just a tad too far in pp as the whit bottle has completely blended with the background. I know that is perhaps what you were aiming for but I'm just giving feedback based on my likes/dislikes. Agree with blondie606 about the barcode and the crop but all in all it is a good shot :)

Here we are week 4 - Nothing I was trying to do was working out this week so I'm a bit stuck. Ok so I've not stuck to one but these are the best of a bad week :( Really need to get the shot. :bang:

Week 4 - Open

tp-52-4.jpg

52-4.jpg

The first is a shot of a performer at my Father-in-laws b-day do at a Casino and I though I'd try some 'Gig' style shots that I have seen other people do. I think I might have over saturated it as it was quite red anyway and I thought I go for slightly exaggerated look.

The second I was can see brilliant blood red sunset against this tree and cityscape back ground. Except when I had my camera it wasn't playing ball....

Thanks for the comments all appreciated and I do read them all and put my own on others. :-)

Hi, David, I took a trip to Hull today (The Deep) with my wife and 2 of my 3 daughters and my wife drove and for a significant part of the journey I was looking at the winter trees and I have to say I prefer them to the full bloom, summer trees.

I really like the skeletal effect of the trees and you've captured them really well.

I like the sky and city lights.

I'd like to see the lower left bush removed?? but I feel the two right trees balance the photograph, it would be a bit bare without them.

Cheers and great photograph.

Thanks for that; I'm still waiting for the sunset to appear again - sods law.

I hear what you say about winter trees; I have an American friend who has travelled quite far taking photos and he says nothing beats an bare English tree on its own in field. You can't seem to get it anywhere wlse in the world.

Here we go, week 5 - Hard. Intention is to show a contrary of soft hands and hard glass

I could visualise what I wanted to do but I was finding it difficult to do as I think I could have done with lighting off to the side to make the edges of the glass stand out and soften the hands even more. My PP still need a bit more skill but this is what the 52 is for. C&C much appreciated as I want (and need) to learn :)

Like your interpretation of the theme, I was struggling myself.

Really nice shot, great DOF and like the processing you've done on it to get the particular tones on the skin.

Just thought i'd pop by your 52, and there are some great shots in here! well done.

OK, so I've been a bit slow but I just been having a complete blank about these two until earlier today and I though I'd better try them out.

Week 6 - Clutter

tp-52-6.jpg

This one is the clutter of empty beer bottles that I have in the back of the utility room that I use for homebrew. I was trying to use a single point of light and some b/w conversion to give it a dark/moody feel. Not to sue I've succeeded really so I'd appreciate some feedback on this.

Week 7 - Delicate

tp-52-7.jpg

Now my daughter has chicken pox so its out with the calamine lotion and cotton wool; now I thought that when something is delicate you wrap it in cotton wool (so to speak); couple with this I watched some lego still frame animations on youtube yesterday I thought I'd combine the two (a bit). I was torn between giving this a really soft focus but wasn't sure whether the whole thing would look a smudge

C&C much appreciated on these :)

Fab idea for delicate I love it! Great work! Mark

I really like your 'Delicate' shot -what a great idea! :D

Hope your daughter feels better soon, chicken pox is a tough one! :(

Ok, some its turning into a 52 updated fortnightly at the moment but I'm keeping it with.

Week 8 - Chaos

http://www.watkinson.me/2011-52/tp-52-8.jpg

I finally relented and let my daughter have a bunny and i was trying to capture the chaos that he causes in his hutch and on the floor nearby; mess everywhere. Went for a long exposure to try and get some movement of him in the image to give it a sense of movement and chaos. Also the 'see-through' door on the right. A image of experimentation.

Week 9 - Finish

tp-52-9.jpg

Ok, so i think a few people have gone for something like this but it was one of the first things that popped into my head when I saw the title and I was trying to get the rings of head going down the glass and again at the bottom; not sure it worked entirely.

C&C much welcome on these; feel free to be picky :)

Hi, me either but now I can see it! Maybe the rest of the shot needs to be a bit clearer so we know what's going on and why a glass/drink is in there. Like a pub scene or something. Or maybe a side shot would be better. Nice idea though and definitely on theme.
Well done on hanging in there with the 52!

Thanks for those; I tried a sideways on shot but I think I left it a bit too long as the rings of froth has started to disppear and it all looked a bit rubbish and I just couldn't get the sort of 'contrasty' look that I wanted.

I see our point that if I did a sideways shot the background then come into play a bit more and the surroundings are definately important hence take a photo in a pub/bar. Trouble is this was in my study room and the rest of it is either beer brewing kit or my computer (putting the boring utilities to one side)

Hi David

ahhh...I see it now ! I got most confused after reading the bit about your daughters bunny then seeing the picture :bonk: Can see what you were aiming for , quite a difficult image to capture I'd guess .Maybe try it again on a reshoot week as with home brew kit it sounds like you'll not be short of props

Week 10 - Trio

I know this is probably a repetitive sort of shot for this week but it was something I had not yet done (wrt using Photoshop) so I thought I'd give it a go. Now some friends asked me to do some family shots and I thought some of them would look good as a triptych, and this is the result. Reasonable I thought, but C&C is welcome :)

tp-52-10.jpg

Suppose to have a white border but may not be visible depending on your background.

Week 11 - Knowledge

Now, Books are the record of knowledge, without which we would be cavemen again. I've seen other people try this sort of shot so, again, it's one I've not done before and it gave me an excuse to use my new Raynox I've recently acquired. Of the other shots I tried the back ground looked rubbish so I ended up putting another book at the back to give it a 'studious' look.

tp-52-11.jpg

Week 12 - Moderation

*Hic* :gag:

Well I had a choice, and I took it in moderation :p

tp-52-12.jpg

Simple but effective and a nice sheen - a bit like my style shot without the blur; it's made me realise that I need to get some decent back ground material rather than using white towels and blurring them out.

Hi David, I really like your trio, 3 very nice photographs there, I am just wondering how it would look if 1 and 3 were swapped over, so that both faces would be looking inwards?

Knowledge, I like this, the vignette works quite well.

Moderation, I really like this one as well, it's great, maybe move the empty glass a little, as it has split the y on the side of the bottle.

Trio - I know what you mean I did try it the other way but I thought it gave the feeling of being a bit too closed in and this way made it appear more open and sprightly - strange words but thats the feeling I got. I'll see if I can dig up the psd and swap them over for you too compare.

Vignetting was enforced on the knowledge on really due tot he Raynox; I probably still would have put it on anyway had it not been there - gives it a bit of an intense/studying focus (maybe:p )

Another fortnightly update.

Week 13 - Empty
tp-52-13.jpg

I was thinking empty beer glasses but I'd done something similar before and then I stumbled across some empty shells in the garden; cue i dug out my macro (Raynox) to try and get a sense of scale and 'emptyness'; Also trying to get the lighting right as my study/studio is a bit rubbish so it was out with my off-shoe flash to get the lighting right(ish). :D

Anyway, please C&C as I'm sure I've missed ideas. :)

Week 14 - Object (of Love)
tp-52-14.jpg

This was a present from my daughter to the wife and I thought it was a lovely object (of love) and I was trying to catch it in a different light. I spend ages trying to get the lighting right to get rid of the shadows and evenly light it; and then it hit me :bonk: right at the end about using a flash to purposely create the shadow and use it as part of the image with a purpose to give a slightly different feel. Its B&W as I don't think colour did anything anyway as it was a white ornament

Hi David, like your empty photograph, the composition is really good, the lighting is almost spot on, perhaps just a little more inside the shells hole.
I like the conversion on your object, it suits it well, I just can't make my mind up if I like the shadow,

Now you mention it I see what you mean about the lighting in the shell, I was struggling to try and minimise the shadow from one flash unit this didn't occur to me, maybe I need a second for things like this.

As for the other, would the photo then look too mundane and borin without the shadow?
