I don't really have enough experience with modifiers or with anything in general but I don't think you can go wrong with a 28" Apollo!

I have two softboxes that I love. 90x90cm and 60x60cm. Great quality of light that you can modify by removing / twisting internal and external diffusers.

For fast shooting: convertible umbrella.

I love my ringflash adapter too....

Mine would be the 28" Westcott apollo too. I have used it a great deal yet, but it produces a great soft light.. couple of pics with it..
