Hi All,

I recently bought a Tamron 17-50VC for my Nikon D7000. I'm experiencing some noise and vibration when trying to auto focus when the VC is selected to on. This has even been a bit of blur when looking through the viewfinder.

Is this a faulty lens?

For what it's worth I've not blown away by the quality of the shots although this might be partly down to lack ot tecnique!

I'm pretty much inexperienced so any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I'm pretty sure its just the VC making its usual sounds, the blur through the viewfinder will just be the way the stabilisation works. I have never used this lens though, but I'm sure someone with the same one will be along soon enough to confirm.

Not used Tamrons VC, but buzzing or grinding noises are normal in Image stabilised lenses. You may even hear some clicks and bangs.

The view through the viewfinder should jiggle about for a bit and then settle down and be perfectly still, this is how Canon, Nikon and Sigma's work, so I would imagine Tamron is the same.

I had the the canon version for a few months and I definately recall the VC mechanism being loud and I got jumping the the viewfinder as the VC kicked. The only thing I can think of with the blur comment is your camera struggling to get focus lock, which I got a fair bit especially with the slow af. That was one of the reasons I sold it (lost a fair bit of £ doing so) and got the orginal canon with its ultrasonic af! I hear good things about the sigma equivalent and nikon version (but thats about the same £ as what you probably paid for your d7000!)

Thanks for the replies, at least I know it's not a fault with that individual lens.

Hi Chris, just noticed your post now, welcome to TP

How are you getting on with this now? I know the VC version is said to be not as good as the non VC original version, i have the non and get great results from it. To be honest there is not a huge amount of different between it and the nikon 50mm f1.8 when mounted on tripod and shot at f8, thats how good it is.

What other goodies did you purchase then?

Mike

^^^ This.

Certainly there's a low level whirring noise when VC starts, but very soon after I get a stable image in my viewfinder.

Very happy with its IQ on my 7D.
