Fastest photo editing software?

I have just switched from shooting in jpg to shooting in RAW (Nikon).

I edit using Corel Paintshop pro Photo X3. On a reasonable size photoshoot (circa 200 photos) my photos are taking 25 minutes to fully load into the paintshop organiser even after they have been imported onto the laptop.

Is Corel particularly slow? Are there faster running editing programmes out there or is it more likely my 18 month old dual core amd processer, 4gb RAM laptop?

Google for raw converters, there are a few free ones you can try to see if you get an improvement. How big are these files btw?

Photo Mechanic is regarded as probably the quickest.

Nikon View NX2 is a free download and is great for NEF processing.

It uses the same algorithms as Capture NX2 but does not have all the extra adjustments so it is more efficient and therefore faster.
