As I am getting a bit better at this now I was in a quandary whether to buy a quicker camera like the d7000 but the advice I am being given is that a better lens would be the more sensible option.

I have the standard 18 -55 kit lens and the Nikkor 70-300 and Tamron 70-300 both with aperture of around 5.6 (I think)

I would dearly love the 70-200 afs 2.8 but that is seriously unjustifiable as I only do this a a hobby, so the 80-200 2.8 was offered as an alternative.

I just wondered which version of the lens would be better for me as I take lots of fieldsport photography.

I was always told to buy the best glass you could afford - ok - that was back in the days of film (...I'm an old git, fair enough, I admit it) - but to be honest, now that digital has got it's act together in terms of resolving power, it's pretty much true across the board.

Can't comment on specifics, but I'm sure someone will be along soon enough to give teh lowdown

If you can afford the 80-200 you can afford a sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 which is a corker of a lens.. So is the 80-200 though, so horses for courses.

I paid £350 for my sigma and its better than the Nikon vr1 version I owned a while back.

You will need the 80-200mm afs if you want it to AF on your d5000
