Fast telephoto lens

Hi all,
Im looking for my first telephoto lens. I'm quite the beginner and only get the opportunity to shoot every once in a while or when it's a special occasion.
I'm looking for a zoom 50/70mm+? to compliment my:

• 35MM 1:1.8G
• 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G

Like I say, I'm only a beginner and have a Nikon D3100.

I'm really after something with a maximum Aperture of F/2.8
I would love the Nikon 70-200 but it's far to expensive as this really is only a light hobby.
I've been looking into Sigma and Tamron as their lenses are cheaper and was particularly interested in the:
Sigma/Tamron 70-200.

The more I look, the more I find out, which in turn frazzles my brain!
Sigma also do a 50-150.
Nikon make a 80-200 which I never knew about... I just can't decide because there are so many lenses out there.

I don't mind buying second hand off of eBay or on any second hand lens websites and really want to spend as little as possible - ideally no more than £600. I probably sound like a really cheapscate but I can't afford to spend large lumps of money on lenses.
If anyone could help it would be much appreciated!

The sigma 70-200 is the obvious choice. The Nikon 80-200 is great also, but you will need the AF-S version which still commands a high price.

You should pick up a sigma for under £400. There are many different Variants of it, but all are good.
I've just picked up a APO HSM Macro and it's incredibly sharp even at f/2.8.
Not used the tamron, but it gets some good reviews.
