I'm sure my manual said it can sync to a speed of 1/250. I'm using elinchrom d-light 4 with a trigger and having set up the sync I can still see the shutter just coming in. Put it down to 1/200 and its fine. I don't suppose it really matters as I can just shoot at 1/200 instead but why add it as a feature ? Anyone experienced this?

Even if your particular camera can theoretically synch at 1/250th ( I don't know whether it can but I doubt it) it will really be pushing it to the limit, and will only work if you're using a really good radio trigger with no delay, or a synch lead.

And, as you say, it's pointless anyway. Most of us shoot at around 1/125th in the studio, that shutter speed is fine for nearly every situation and is foolproof.

550D's max sync speed is officially 1/200sec, though the handbook usually recommends lower speeds with studio flash (check it out - my 5D2 suggests 1/30-1/60sec ) and as Garry says unless you've got a fast trigger (Skyport Speed?) then you may not get 1/200sec. 1/125sec is my usual default speed when there's no significant ambient light to worry about.
