I ahve just been asked to cover a childrens fashion show at my daughters primary school (well it will be next year when she is old enough).

They want coverage of the show generally and some photos of the kids to sell to parents to raise funds etc.

It will be a first for me, has anyone got any advice?

Chris

You will probably want fast lenses. I did a Fashion show here at work (6th Form College) and I found it very hard with the kit lens I had to use. Something like a 50mm f1.8 or maybe something a bit longer (85mm?) The reason I found it tricky was due to the light being relatively poor (flashing coloured spotlights), and I didn't want to use a flash as it would have been too intrusive on the show. Oh, and get strong arms. My arms were very tired after 1200 shots in 2 hours.

Ive done a couple of fashion show shoots and would also recommend something fast, i used my 24-70f2.8 and 70-200f2.8IS, to ensure the models stood out I kept to f2.8 with both lenses and ramped the up to between ISO1000-1250, this gave me shutter speeds of 1/200th which was more can fast enough, and with the 70-200 the IS helped a lot.

I was using a 5D body so could get away with such a high ISO. Also, avoid using a flash if you can, because you tend to lose all the atmosphere if your not careful. As yours is a small venue being a Primary School you may get away with the Nifty Fifty if you have one, as it will let in loads of light and you should be able to get right up close.

Dreeder, hope you dont mind me asking but were they 'big' fashion shows?
If so, how close could you get to the runway?

I also have the 5D, no flash (though I could get one beforehand) and only my 85mm & 50mm.
I was kind of feeling that it might not be worth my while with these lenses & that I might not have enough reach & feel a bit silly alongside the pro's, so undecided as to whether I should even take the cam (I have to work too and dont know what facilities are available for my gear).

I have a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 but I am concerned it wont be long enough, I also have a Canon 55-200 F4.5-5.6 but concerned that it wont be fast enough.

Do you think I could persuade Jessops or LCE to let me try out a 70-200 2.8L overnight?
