Hey guys I plan to take some fashion shots on the beach next week, weather permitting of course. My sister is currently working on a portfolio for uni and she needs shots where she has done the make up. I plan using off camera flash on the day.

I'd really appreciate any advice or tips you might have, I am new to all this.

What kind of tips are you after?

Just use your creativity & try to avoid changing your lens while you're on the beach

Some ideas:
if its sunny, don't have the sun behind you, the model will squint.
Try contra jour - shooting into the sun with fill flash.
Try early morning or sunset?
Watch horizons.

hi. so when are you going? what kind of lighting?
east coast or west coast? or south? sunset, sunrise etc?
do you have a reflector? are you shooting into the sun and need fill flash?
there is loads of great advice but be more descriptive.
for make up shots are you doing full length or just head shots?
seems a bit of a waste using a great setting like a beach and only doing headshots.
one off camera flash? are you lighting from behind using a 2nd flash? or natural light etc, to simulate a hair light for example?

gwan , don't be shy.

Have an assistant, and a large reflector or the flash - the wind will be a nightmare to contend with, and likelihood of flash in sand or water is a very high probability.

Try to avoid the mid day sun, especially if you plan to shoot with flash. It won't be enough to match the sun

Go in shorts and sturdy sandals. You'll likely get very soggy feet anyway.

Since it's for your sister's make up portfolio, you'll want to really want to concentrate on the quality of light over the choice of background (if you can find both, it's a bonus). Try to find open shade where you can see the make up in nice diffused light.

And do try not to fall over :) Have fun.
