Fake Ebay Canon LP-E6 Battery

Caveat emptor: I've just received a fake Canon LP-E6 from Ebay. It was from UK seller jasonmaja, cheap but not implausibly so, and was described as genuine. Hopefully I'll get my money back, but I found these two pages useful in confirming my hunch that all was not well:

The seller has 100% feedback, but looking in more detail there are 5 items of neutral feedback from purchasers who also received counterfeit batteries. In hindsight I should have been more suspicious of a seller of batteries who can't spell that word ("all batterys are tested and charged before they are posted").

why if "you" (as in people) receive counterfeit leave a neutral feedback?
 
I'm incredulous that I've received a second LP-E6 today from a different UK seller which is also counterfeit. It's actually a more convincing fake than the previous one, but one of several pointers was that the label on the battery contains 3 spelling mistakes!

I phoned Ebay to complain about the first fake and they couldn't care less, and as a result the trader is still happily selling batteries which I assume are also counterfeit. I guess that they don't care as long as they get their fees, but I've learnt my lesson.
 
eBay has been a home for fake items for years, batteries and memory are the two biggest culprits but you must know that a genuine battery is not going to be cheap and if it's cheap it's not genuine.
 
if your going to buy batteries from ebay you might as well buy the ones advertised as genuine third party fakes for a fiver lol
 
I have purchased 'genuine Canon' batteries from this chap. Having seen this thread, I can now concur that they would appear to be fakes...... This doesn't make me feel particularly happy.:bat:

However, I deal with Li-ion rechargeable batteries as part of my daily life (nothing to do with photography) and I can only say this:

  • These batteries work as well as the 'genuine' batteries
  • They charge as well as the 'genuine' batteries
  • They register in the camera as LP-06
  • They don't loose charge over a few weeks

The only thing I'd like to see (but haven't yet) is a website backed by Canon that officially confirms these 'fakes'. I've seen too many internet experts discredited over time to believe one or two private websites which have then been replicated and plagiarised across the globe. Genuine battery parts can be made in different factories by different methods and this could account for the differences being shown.:shrug:

Yes I got them at a decent price - but not so cheap as to think they were fakes. They were being sold cheaper because they had 'damaged retail packaging'.

If I've been duped, the product is still doing it's job as expected.:thinking:

I have just had a pair of ebay third party ones for £13 delivered and they seem A ok

I was 'discounted' at £125 for 5. I'm a great supporter of the idea that buying cheap is buying dear. At £25 each (discounted for quantity), I really didn't think they were 'toooooo cheap'.:suspect:
 
Further to giving the eBay seller benefit of the doubt, I've now got five batteries which all say (in very small writing) RECYDLE instead of RECYCLE.:shake:

There is still one other avenue which woud explain the lack of fake confirmation from Canon. It could be that these were genuine, but someone noticed a spelling mistake after production which meant that they went out the back door of the factory rather than the front?:shrug:
 
My non genuine batteries last longer than the genuine ones.
 
I have a pentax K5 and a K7.

2 Genuine batteries and 5 repo's (I cannot call them fake as I bought them from 7 day shop knowing full well that they were errrrm.. "third party")

Nothing wrong with them whatsoever...

same voltage
same mAh

£7 v £40

no brainer

I don't know if their stance has changed, (although it doesn't sound as though it has) but eBay will only take action if they receive a complaint from the original manufacturer.

I bought fake Sandisk CF cards and whilst Sandisk confirmed they weren't genuine, they also weren't interested in pursuing the seller. I suppose it gives strength to their advice of only buying from authorised outlets.
 
I had some issues with some Sandisk cf cards. Sandisk appeared to not care less - actually gave me a bit of a lecture about buying them. The fakes were so good, I had purchased several over time and only realised my mistake when they started to fail.

Sandisk were not too bothered either about the failure of the fakes!
 
if I had been conned like this I would be reporting them to trading standards

With all due respect, why would they? They aren't their products and failures would just encourage people to buy genuine ones through official channels.

Add to that, Sandisk and other manufacturers have no hope of stopping the fakes and too it's costly to persue one eBay seller.
