Ive been doing quite alot of events recently, which I really enjoy...but the main thing that annoys me is with everyone cropping your watermark out :(:p

Ive done a fair amount of nightclub work and gigs and generally put the watermark bottom right hand side, other than one all the way through the middle which doesn't look great are there any alternatives?

Probably not, but worth an ask.

Of course they'll crop your watermark out if they can. This is because such people are inherently dishonest. The only realistic course of action is to place the watermark in such a position that it can't be cropped out without ruining the entire image. Otherwise, as sure as eggs is eggs, some thieving little b****r will nick it. Sad fact of life, I'm afraid.

Are these previews they've not bought you're talking about? If so, slap it straight across the face. Doesn't stop them evaluating it, but they're far less likely to use it.

I use a system called PASS by a company called Showit, it shares photos embedded with a link back to my website. So I get the referrals and acknowledgement without having to watermark.

I had a look at this after you mentioned it.

Interesting, *from* $39 per month, I guess its quite nice. Some nicely done example customer sites.

Failed the "can I screenshot it with shift-printscreen" test though. I guess it always was going to fail that.

Ultimately, any form of digital display is asking for it.

You either make low res/low quality samples and don't care about facebook usage or do care and slap a massive watermark right across the middle.

If your running this as a business or at least to sell the images why don't you get yourself a website then you can make them viewable by password only, as issued to the client?

If your market is the people at the event, then it needs to be open so everyone can see your images and hopefully buy an image. Passwords will spread just as fast as a fart in a spacesuit.

Watermarking has minimal effect with some takers, profile pics get changed rapidly. Just take the loss on the chin, not worth the chase in the long run.

Phil.

They are just gig/people/nightclub photos tabs will be hosted on my Facebook page. So yeah as above the idea will be for people to tag away so everyone needs to see them. Plus the promoter may use some.

Might use a couple for my website. A few people have mentioned about buying them-but this was during various night and no doubt they where drinking!

I was thinking about outing the watermark on the side horizontal but not all the way across-but again this can ruin the image :(

If you don't like it, slap a dirty watermark straight in the middle of the image. You say it would ruin the photo, isn't that the idea?
Otherwise you just have to take it on the chin, I don't know anyone who would pay for a facebook profile picture.

You have to get used to the idea that they don't care. Here's a screenie of a facebook thumbnail page with some of mine

Make it more transparent and centre it more.

Why?

Facebookers want them for free, why make it easier for them? There is a double edged sword with watermarks, they promote your business = good, they show others where there are free photos = bad.

I have yet to meet anyone who wants to buy images just for facebook, you could offer them (I have) a full set for facebook at just £10, and days later they are all over facebook with the watermark still there, heavy crops and pixleated to death. It's an instant fix for the viewer with no value other than 'This is me doing .....'. they will be changed on the next event or night out.

What's your thoughts on watermarks for the promoters of the nights I photograph at?

Many clubs expect their watermark to be used, especially where I operate, it is their marketing as much as it is your own.
You can look at this in two ways, the first being that you are being paid to work for their company, if you were a photographer for any other company you wouldn't be using your own watermark on what is now their images.
The flipside of this is that you either would charge more money to essentially have this watermark lost and the move to the club having greater privileges of the image.

Doing everything for free atm..

For promoters, how about a 2 line watermark -

Then the ball is entirely in your court, there is no reason why you shouldn't put your own watermark, but think what you're getting from the club for marketing them.

RE the users cropping and using, unfortunately this is how it works, most users think that the club will have paid for these images and will actually want them cropped and tagged and shared for their own benefit.
