Morning

Well I had an interesting evening yesterday, I had my Nikon z7ii and a lens on Facebook market, somebody arranged to come around and buy it.
I answered the door to a 6ft 4 Irish chap. His first words to me were " you don't look like a photographer", I thought this sounded strange. I'm a also close to 6ft4 and 16 stone as I play a lot of rugby and attend the gym a lot
I showed him the Nikon camera and lens, he didn't even seem interested and dint even look the camera over, for an item at £2.5k again I thought this was strange.
I asked for the payment to be completed by bank transfer, he had some type of fake doggy app on his phone which he put my details in and the app came back saying the money had been sent.
I logged into my banking app and surprise surprise no payment, he said it could take upto 2 hrs to show. I said that's fine you can come back in 2 hours then, he said no I've just sent you £2.5k and the goods are mine , I said not a chance are these goods leaving my property until the money is showing. He they said I could take a picture of his driving license for my security
After a heated debate and a phone call to both banks he said he would call back in two hours.

I waited two hours and he didn't, show, I tried to send him a message and he had blocked me and removed his profile.

I will never use Facebook market ever again, during the day I must have had 5 other people asking me to post it and they would pay via PayPal etc.

A close call and a warning to others !

Something similar happened to another person selling a PS4 local to us. Glad you did not get scammed.

one reason why it is worth selling or buying on here first, I don't think any members would try and scam you
I did do but no takers on here, it's now ready to be sent to LCE who gave me a good deal

Never as yet had a problem with marketplace ,but thanks for the heads up ….
By the blokes opening comment he sounded like he was looking for someone he could intimidate

Well I can't imagine anyone parting with £2.5k worth of gear before the money hits the bank, but there is no doubt that scammers make their money. :(

If you're somewhat of an alarmist, the 'buyer' now knows where you live, and probably took notice of security and other valuables.

Make up a fake lanyard ID pass from your local police force and wear it around your neck / on your shirt pocket as you answer the door.

Easiest way to see if anyone is trying a scam on Facebook market place, if they ask for bank details and an email, or Paypal and a phone number if you give either the email or phone number they stand a chance of getting a change of login sent to themselves saying they no longer have access to the ones you give, you can normally tell just by their questins, like, What is the current condition, even though you have stated in the ad, I just wind them up for a bit and then say something like, thanks for answering all my questions I now have your i.p address and they soon leave and block, all good fun if you can spot them

Getyourself a Ring doorbell if you can - I have and it's great. Was in the sale for £30, and I think I pay around about 2 or 3 a month for the sub, but it's worth it for sure. You see now, you'd have some ID of the guy and you can use it, everyone that comes within 18f ft of the front door are recorded on mine.

If you've got a back door, then maybe get one there too. I don't as we're got a backyard and fence, and a conservatory, which is always double locked, and there is no public access to the back either.

Good idea, I think I'll purchase one from Amazon

No - really don't do that!

Ring sub is going up and without a sub they’re fairly useless and easily nicked. I prefer a cheaper no subscription security camera that records, eg TP LINK Tapo in my case, there are others.

Still worth the money IMO and I have the wired one - a lot cheaper and not so easily nicked. Mine's got me out of a few 'sticky' situations just in the last nine months (since I got it).

And there endeth the lesson. Smaller-lighter made up man would have been bullied into submission by his reckoning I bet.

No doubt he has scammed before using his frame and stature!

What would you do with the footage?
The police don’t give a s***.

Devil's advocate comment? In the same vein, what would you switch off the CCTV at work as police wouldn't not be interested in a civil matter, and you wouldn't sue an individual if something was amiss, in a similar context?

If it was me - IF it was me, I would share as far and wide as I could. Similar to what I did a while back of some low-life that went checking all our doors on our block at aournd 2am in the morning.. Every group (neighborhood etc) I'm in, I shared..

If I could be bothered, would do the whole LinkedIn thing too.

Being serious for a mo... A neighbour of ours had cctv and several times the police did ask to see it when something happened in the area.

Facebook would be the last place id sell something valuble, certainly £2.5k.
I havent had any problems with selling low - sub £250 items. Ive been lucky on all oaccasions its been dry so the bike and furniture has been outside in the garden ready and ive put it in the drive when they arrive.

That's my experience too, when I had a good CCTV system covering the outside of my studio. Most of us assume that just because we don't see police, that they do nothing, but their frequent knocks at my door taught me otherwise.

We had a knock on the door from a very polite police officer recently asking if our doorbell had recorded a anyone walking down the road between 8 and 10pm the previous night. They were looking for an elderly woman who was missing from the local care home and the police were trying to track her movements. We don't have any CCTV in the area but several of us have Ring-type doorbells and the police were going from house to house checking them.

Unfortunately, the doorbell was in the house being recharged that night so we couldn't help :( but thankfully the missing woman was found safe and well a few hours later :)

Yes I had a similar enquiry (don’t know what incident) but my cameras don’t ’see’ much of the street.

Mine neither. I got fed up with being told every time a car drove up the road so set the limits to the boundary of the front garden.

Yes, mine has 3 sorts: “line crossing”, “motion detection” & “area intrusion”. But some or all can be set off by large white vehicles or vehicles with bright lights or ambulances (of which we get a lot, being route to A1 (M) ) especially in the middle of the night. The view of the road is small and only about 5% (guess) of the screen :(.

It's not facbook market place that is the problem at all.

It is selling things by bank transfere. One person insists they have paid and the other say's they have not received the money. This does not just happen with doddgey apps (whatever they are) it happens with genuine transaction..

Just use cash.

UPDATE

Two men this morning tried breaking into my property whilst me and my wife were at work, Luckily my next-door neighbor is a retired police officer and was on hand to scare them off after they tried kicking my back door in, the police arrived quickly but they had gone on arrival. Seems a bit sus that we have never had one attempted break-in over the 18 years we have lived here  :$ The description of one of the would-be burglars roughly matches the description of the scammer.
I cant believe it has come to this, my wife is now refusing to come home in case they come back

My Gosh.

Do you have any info that could help identify him?

My other neighbors are going through their cctv from Tuesday to see if they can see him arriving at my house, I have just ordered a ring door bell and a cctv camera for the rear of my property, to late now but hopefully it will give my wife some peace of mind
