did anyone go last year to the f1 testing at silverstone did you go one two or three days and w2as it any good for photos thanks john::shrug:

I went for one day last year. It was great, you have pretty much access to anywhere around the track.

Last year and the year before you are limited to the sections between bridge through to just after copse (1st corner)

This includes the pit straight and the luffield complex.

Luffield was the best viewing place for photography. 300mm lens OK. You could either stand at the back of the terrace and shoot over the fence, or (if no-one was looking) climb over the guard rail and get right up to the fence and shoot through it or just above it.

Pretty much summed up well by andrewc. The only thing I would add is that it now costs to get in, but for Formula 1 it's always worth the money if you ask me :)

Anyone interested in Formula 1 should go along to this event. Hardly anyone is there (compared to Race weekend) and its cheap.

However, access is restricted - for example, no grandstand access at most places, so the majority of viewing is from trackside. I prefer this anyway, and some good spots are on the outside down at Stowe and Vale/Club

A positive and a negative - As the cars are testing, they may do many, many laps OR they may do none....You cannot be sure.... And it may be the test driver and not the race driver - so if you are looking out for someone in particular they may not even be there...

Another thing is that you are unlikely to get any shots with more than one car in - i.e. Racing against eachother.

Just wanted to give you a heads up. Its still a great day out.

Yep.

Could be Lewis, Could be Heikki, Could be a test driver. Could be looking for a qualifying setup, could be looking for a race setup, could be testing parts - you never really know what they're doing on each day.

Not sure if its worth going for all 3 days - you'd need to be a committed F1 fan to do this, so just go on the day with the best weather forecast.

They're not racing but they'll often put some quick laps in just for the ego boost of topping the time sheets.

For the last two years, spectators have been restricted to the top end of the circuit - Bridge through to Copse.

Ah, didn't realise this. I couldn't go to last years but the year before I was with BRDC member and we went all around the outside of the track. Didn't see anyone stopping us mind, but thanks for letting us know.

I'll will go this year, but maybe by myself, we will see.

Just my tuppenceworth, but I would suggest a cheap flight to Barcelona instead.

All viewing areas are open (entire track, plus grandstands), and you can wander as you please. Loads of great photo spots, close to the action (I was shooting 150mm a lot of the time on a D3, so 100mm on DX crop), and a good chance of great weather. It was free on the day I was there, but I believe it's sometimes 5 euros entry.

Oh, and you get a few days in Barcelona :woot:

I've been for the last three years. I've always gone on the middle day. Not everyone starts early on the first day, and if the weathers crap there's a good chance they'll pack up early in the afternoon on the third day. Managed to blag my way into the pits for the afternoon on the last two years which has been great, the closest you'll get to the cars, and they're awesome as they leave even on the limiter.

There's a whole bunch of shots on my site here and here
