F1 meets FIFA

Haha! Totally ridiculous, and I think of questionable legality if push came to shove. I'd guess Nico has taken it off to avoid controversy.

Thats the trouble today, so much gets seen, years ago he would have worn it for race day, end of, only F1 fans would have seen it, but with social media the way it is everyone sees it before the event.

Apart from anything else, surely the dates are all wrong? While WEST Germany may have won 3 times before, I have a feeling that this is the first time a united Germany has lifted the world cup.

Not really, they are defending their trademark / images rights just as a tog might do with their copyright. Legally it will be watertight and if FIFA don't aggressively do something about it their sponsors won't pay the eye waters fees for exclusivity / association with the event.

I know what you mean, but it's still daft. Trade marks and copyright are there to protect commercial interests, as you say, but Rosberg's helmet doesn't conflict with that. If his helmet manufacturer then wanted to sell replicas, that might be different.

Well his helmet will be broadcast to millions around the world in a commercial enterprise where sponsorship is king so i reckon its a fair shout from FIFA. I agree with your sentiment entirely but the nuts and bolts of it is he / the F1 team would be infringing so its cut and dry. And it's the thin end of the wedge, they have to protect their bread and butter income so the massive line is draw in the sand.

You can bet if FIFA stuck the F1 symbol on a t-shirt or similar during a pre-match warm up and said well done to an F1 champion, FIFA would be getting a knock on the doors from the F1 lawyers.

Of course, FIFA blocking the weekend's use of the helmet design has actually resulted in it being seen by millions more people than would have seen it had it just been ignored!

Aye the Streisand effect :). It's a win / win for everyone, FIFA shows it won't tolerate infringement and the F1 driver shows he's very proud. The lawyers got richer as well.
