ezybox speedlite good?

hi,

i was going to purchase a 2 head lighting kit such as elinchrom d lite or lencarta when i went on the lastolite website and watched a video on the ezybox that fits on a speedlite. I think they are brilliant as i can do portrait on location. Do you think a couple of speedlite 580s with 2 of these ezyboxes would be sufficient for indoor portraiture too? I went on a lighting course a while back and used the elinchrom and they were 200w heads and we hardly used half of the power available so these should be enough shouldnt they?

I have just purchased the newest Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe Kit 76cm x 76cm its big but effective...have just used it a couple of times so far with a canon 580 ex11 speedlight and the results were excellent..
 
MR G - how stable is it on a stand? What's the speedring/ball-head like in terms of locking and stability?
 
the bracket-stand is a straight fitting, needs to be on an umbrella adapter to give you tilt control, attaches strongly to the stand though

the whole bracket assembly wobbles a bit, but the big stability issue is where the softbox attaches to the ring, comes off fairly easily, also as a system is not well balanced
 
A straight bracket isn't that bad an idea actually, providing it can be attached easily to any kind of ball head or even a tripod.

Regarding the speedring fit, this is one thing that I'm finding unreliable with my current 40x40cm box - outdoors it just keeps blowing off so I'm now just using it handheld, which works when doing close-up portraiture, but useless for wider shots. I'm generally having to shoot bare flash instead. 76x76cm is a big, big box - might be a better idea for doing on-location (indoors) shooting
 
I've got one of the lastolite ezybox's that I use with my sb600. They are great but not very big and cost quite a lot. A bigger diffuser will give you a softer light, ideal for portraits. I've recently bought a calumet 1.45m umbrella which is huge, cheaper than a softbox and gives off a lovely soft light from a flashgun. If I was you I'd get a large umbrella and one ezybox

Its not bad the Tilthead bracket/ that comes with it is quite basic.. but its not to bad... with the 76x76 that I have because it is big does wobble slightly.. just used it indoors at the mo but would imagine you would need some kinda weight to hold the stand down outside.. ;)

with the relevant brass monkeys you can hook it up to anything you like, I use it on a manfrotto umbrella adaptor cos I got one but it has the fitting that drops onto the top of a light stand and tightens up

for better attachments I think the kitty kat is the baby apollo tbh
 
I got one when they first came out. OK indoors but couldn't use it much outdoors as it kept blowing off, even in the slightest breeze.

It's sat in the boot of my car for the past few years. Another thing I carry round, just in case...
