Having just bought a mini Mac I now looking at external storage as I plan to keep most/all docs/photos/videos/music off the internal ssd. On my current Windows set up I am using external HDD drives with usb3 connectors and I do not find speed to be an issue for what I do.

With the much lower cost of ssd these days, this seems to be obvious choice. However there is choice between portable units and caddies for M.2 NVMe SSD or the older M.2 SATA SSD. The connection speeds vary considerably.

However, as I do not edit videos or play games, should the slower models be sufficient or am I missing something?

I have a 4TB Samsung T7 for my Mac mini and find it a perfect match and got it for a pretty unbeatable price on sale. Just be cautious of issues with certain SanDisk SSDs which have had failures.

You can carry on using your existing drives.

Hi, I also recently bought the Mac Mini and needed extra storage so purchased from Amazon a

SATECHI Type-C Stand & Hub with SSD Enclosure – Fits M.2 SATA SSD, USB-C Data Port, Micro/SD Card Readers, USB-A & Headphone Jack Port along with 1TB stick so far works great.

I use my iCloud disk for most everything rather than holding much on my Mac mini M2, and backup my LR catalogue and image files to an external SSD, plus do Time Machine backups to another. All works well.

I take it that you have no issues with the speed? Do all the connections work fine?
