Hi folks, just a quick question if I may.

Am I correct to think that I am better to back up images onto an external HD for storage and use an external SSD for more frequent access?

Setting up a new workflow and I have cloud sorted and some old external HDs, but I will purchase some new external drives and wondered if I'm better getting one of each type. HD for long term back up and SSD for more frequent access.

Cheers

You'll get more bang for your buck with spinning rust than with magic silicon. Perhaps 3x the capacity, so standard logic would suggest that you use spinning rust for backups as you can then buy multiple drives to provide allow for the standard of 3 generations of backup.

However, if you are going to be carrying the drives around a lot, then magic silicon might be better as it is less likely to be broken if dropped / mistreated.

I've heard (but don't have a source to hand) that whilst a spining rust failure can often be recovered by specialists, if magic silicon breaks it is gone forever...

There's not a lot of difference in cost now between a more basic 1TB SSD and a HDD. Disadvantage with SSD is that if the data is gone then it's gone - recovery almost impossible. With HDD there are often recovery options, and to me, that makes them a better long-term storage device.

HDD for me.

I have 1, 1TB SSD, just running things, no storage on it as such, no images, documents etc. Just the OS and software, etc.

I have 3, 4TB HDDs, 2 in a NAS and one in my PC tower. There was a space for it so I put it in there. All 3 HDDs are 'mirror' copies of each other, with my images and documents.
