External Hard Drives - 3.5" full size

I've been out of the loop with external hard drives for a bit now (talking about full size, need power adapter ones).

Do current drives on the market power down and up automatically, as needed?

They should at least in theory, but don't forget that 2.5" ones are now 1TB, and some are even 2TB which may be enough and less leads to tinker with.

Thanks - I'm guessing with no on/off switch the only way they be power saving is if they power down automatically. Still would be nice if someone could confirm their drive acts like this

My Seagate one takes a wee while to start-up when it hasn't been in use and the Seagate site says it is energy efficient etc.
